The Importance Of Having A Diverse Group Of Friends

We tend to hang out with people who are similar to us. It's easy to have friendships where you constantly get along. If we spend life in our comfort zones, what can be said of our life experiences? Making decisions is easy when everyone agrees. If you have friends who help you think critically about your decisions, you may benefit more and get more out of whatever the situation is. Having a diverse group of friends is what life is all about. If not, then you might as well be friends with a bunch of robots.

I know myself very well. I plan ahead, I make lists, I color categorize and alphabetize. Any steps to organization have been taken. I'm always on time, if not early. I have a spreadsheet calendar for the semester, a weekly spreadsheet, a spreadsheet for my hours at work and one for family engagements. I am bothered by things not fitting properly, looking nice or clean. I delete things from my Hulu and Netflix queues when I'm done watching them. If you're not me, then you probably know someone like me. And it's quite possible that they annoy you with their type-A personalities. Naturally being this type of person, I can get highly annoyed at people who tend to be late or messy. But this doesn't mean I can't have friends who are either of those things.

What I think is great about being an organized person is that I can help my friends who maybe aren't as organized as I am, whether they need help planning something, budgeting or even researching universities best suited for their Master's degree. Having a good assortment of personality types is important for a balanced life. The same goes for any other friend. I learn and get help from their experiences too. My best friend balances me out. We are polar opposites. We get on each other's nerves and annoy each other with our habits. We still happen to be the greatest of friends no matter what. I think there's a great benefit in having friends that aren't clone copies of you. For example, I'm not always the most spontaneous. I plan what I'm going to do weeks and months ahead of time. My friend is very spontaneous and will randomly ask me to go do things I maybe wouldn't have considered doing. I gain incredible life experiences from having friends like that.

I have friends from many different walks of life. They have different talents and different experiences. They come from different corners of the world, different religions and different cultures. They have helped me grow in many different ways. I couldn't have asked for better friends.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
