As Walt Disney once said, “That’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up.”
I’m never growing up. I just want to make that clear. One day I stumbled upon the word “adulting,” and it caused me to think: What is “adulting” actually referring to? And why are so many people working towards this so-called “adulting”?
You see, I don’t think “adulting” means growing up but rather taking on the responsibilities necessary to maintain a stable job, buy a house, and pay bills.
There is magic inside the heart and soul of children, young adults, and teens because there is still a sense of invincibility, power of excitement, and lust for what the future holds. It seems that as we grow older, often times we also grow up. Meaning we take on more responsibility, more worries, begin to lack excitement, and no longer want to see what the future holds because it means we will be another year older. I believe there is a way to “adult” and take on more necessary responsibilities and yet, never grow up. That being said, I am never growing up.
I am twenty-one years old and I still love going on fair rides, rollerblading, catching caterpillars, making build-a-bears, buying a fresh box of crayons, and playing any type of new board game or card game you can find.
I am twenty-one years old and still find excitement from any and every little thing: finding a penny on the street, finding new favorite songs to listen to, getting to hangout with my parents, going to new movies, going to Disneyworld, meeting new people, finding new books, and trying something new.
So rather than growing up and becoming dry, stressed, tired of all that passes in our day, embrace each day and take the extra stress in stride. Never grow up; embrace the happy, excited child in your heart and allow yourself to lust for what the future will hold for you. Life is a gift, and with that, each moment that passes or is to come is meant for you. No matter your age, don’t dwell on the future; there are many amazing things to come.
As Yoko Ono once said “Some people are old at eighteen and some are young at ninety…time is a concept that humans created.”
I am choosing to be young, and I am not growing up!
