“It takes years as a woman to unlearn what you have been taught to be sorry for." -Amy Poehler
"I'm sorry."
Perhaps they are the most frequently uttered words of every woman.
I'm sorry for being too much. I'm sorry for not being enough.
I'm sorry for being so quiet, so loud.
I'm sorry you mistook my kindness for weakness. I'm sorry you mistook my strength for hatred.
I'm sorry for leading you on. I'm sorry that I'm not interested.
I'm sorry for being too independent. I'm sorry for being too needy.
I've spent half of my life saying "sorry" and now, I'm done. I'm done apologizing for the space I take up on this planet. For the sassy personality that is uniquely mine. For the confidence that makes men feel intimidated and unnecessary.
Instead here's a new one--
I'm not sorry.
I'm not sorry I learned to survive without you. I'm not sorry I don't find my worth in you.
I'm not sorry for my "yes" or for my "no."
I'm not sorry for my success or for my failure.
I'm not sorry for staying and I'm not sorry for walking away.
There's a lot to unlearn but I refuse to be a woman who cowers at her worth. I am worth more than gold. Each of us are. And don't you ever apologize for that. Don't be sorry. Step 100% into the calling, purpose, and value that is uniquely yours. No apology necessary.
