I’ve imagined myself as many things: an animal, an alien, a boy, a ghost, but there is one thing I have yet to imagine myself as — food. This may seem weird because well, it is, but as I thought about this more I began to realize that if I were a five-course meal, I would be strategically created to ensure that the entire experience, from appetizer to dessert, would be one worth remembering.
If I were a soup I would be a delicious warm cup of squash soup with lightly roasted pumpkin seeds on top because even on the coldest nights when the heat isn’t working and the stove has broken and your life seems to be in shambles, I will be there to warm you up and remind you that tomorrow will be a better day.
If I were a salad I would be a spinach salad with sliced strawberries, glazed pecans and homemade poppy-seed dressing because I will give you bursts of energy whenever you need it. I will remind you how to love yourself and how to smile from the inside out. I will show you how to let loose and be as light as a feather even when you’re carrying around a rock.
If I were an appetizer I would be homemade spinach artichoke dip with freshly baked corn tortillas and extra parmesan cheese because I will never leave you feeling unsatisfied or disappointed. I will make sure you are happy and full before I ever decide to walk away but I will never stray too far — I will be there, no matter where you go.
If I were an entrée I would be a filet mignon with steamed broccoli and perfectly cooked garlic risotto because I will remind you what you deserve. I will be sure to prove to you that you deserve the best and are worth the best, even when it doesn’t feel like that. I will remind you what great means. I will help you remember what if felt like to be appreciated.
If I were a dessert I would be New York Cheesecake with fresh strawberries delicately placed on top because I will help you remember your roots, your traditions, that made you who you are. I will help you remember where you came from and watch as you realize the ‘normal’ and ‘boring’ parts of your life are far from normal or boring. I will remind you that sometimes, sticking to what you know, is a good thing.
