If We Were Really Honest About What We Should Give Up For Lent

"The older I become, the harder Lent is... and the more cheat days I create."

Lent started this past Wednesday and I have always been the type of person to give something up. From shopping to chocolate to something as silly as Disney Channel Original Movies, otherwise known as DCOM's. As I get older, though, I’m realizing that I become less disciplined when it comes to Lent. This past week, my friends and I came up with a list of things we could possibly give up, and although we were joking about pretty much all of them, I think it’s important to realize that we think big, even if we don’t follow through with our actions.

Now before I begin, for this year's Lent I am not so much giving stuff up rather than being more honest with myself. This includes self-love, spending more time “taking a breather”, becoming less of a procrastinator, and so I can tell my parents that I gave up something… Instagram (tbh that was actually extremely difficult).

However… if I was really honest with myself and had more will power, I would MAYBE give up…

1. Looking in the mirror. Ok, I will admit, I am extremely vain and have been low-key obsessed with looking in the mirror since I was a baby. No, I’m serious. Apparently, I used to spend HOURS looking in the mirror when I was two years old.

2. Netflix. I was actually thinking about this one, but c’mon people, I’m still on season 1 of Shameless… and it’s AMAZING.

3. Coffee. LOL, I was actually telling people that I was giving this up, and they all laughed at me. Enough said.

4. Shopping. Did I mention I am the biggest retail therapy shopper there is?

5. Going out. One, I’m a college kid, Two, the weather is finally warm. Three, it’s St. Patty’s day in a few weeks... and I go to a very Irish populated college.

6. Chocolate. Well, I was high key thinking about this one, until I came home for break and started craving dark chocolate like no other, and we happened to have dark chocolate chips in our pantry… plus my Starbucks order consists of light mocha syrup, and I cannot cheat on my Starbucks order, we have a tight relationship.

And lastly…

7. Snapchat. I would, I really would. But I get bored EXTREMELY easily and I rely on Snapchat stories to entertain me. Whether it’s a basic pic of food or some fancy beverage or simply a funny video, they are always there. Also, people, I have snap streaks I need to keep up with!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
