The warning I received most frequently before leaving
for Tech was that adjusting to dorm life was the hardest part. Most
college students have never shared such close quarters for such a long period
of time. I heeded this warning and was anxious about living with another
person. Living with three other people? Well that was just out of the
question.
I remember specifically agreeing with my summer roommate that we did not want to request a quad because we were already unsure of how to live with one person, so three would be quite a trip. Well, these Tech students didn't put two and two together (literally) and realize that a room without a door wasn't a floor plan error, but it was actually connected to another room, also known as the quad we were trying to avoid. When rooming assignments came out, we were confused as to why we had three roommates and no door to be seen.
My roommate and I freaked out a little bit because we didn't know if we would even be in the same room. We had no idea who our other two roomies were, or where to find them on social media. We decided that it would be okay, and worst case scenario, it's only a five week semester, right?
I remember being a little bitter about being assigned a quad. I mean, I didn't even remember requesting a quad and how was I supposed to share a space with three other girls? Turns out it's not that difficult when you have three awesome roommates!
Having three roommates is like having three forced friends. I am not at all suggesting you force your roommate to be your friend with threats or creepy clinginess, but your roommates have to be with you at least when you all sleep, and you're all together in the morning, so why not go to breakfast together? You never have to worry about going to eat by yourself, and you pretty much always have someone to study with. There is always someone else that will indulge in chocolate or one more spoon of chunky peanut butter with you. If you locked yourself out of your dorm, your chances of getting your hands on another key are multiplied by three (but you may still have to run to ECHO to rent a loaner key fifteen minutes before your class on west campus).
Three times the roommates multiplies everything by three: the friends, the experiences, and especially the laughs. Each of us have a different taste in music and a different major. We come to our nightly chats with different views as well as open hearts and minds. It's bananas to think that we may not have even been friends had we not been assigned a dorm together, but now we're all wondering why we didn't request a quad with each other in the first place!
Of course we're all excited to meet and room with our fall roomies, though we're all a little bummed that we won't get to live with each other in four short weeks (and especially that we have to move out of our dorm-turned-coffee shop). We've acclimated each other to our catch phrases (I don't know, ya know?), chocolate affinities, polyester aversions, and dorky dancing. (Dorky dancing just me? Oh, okay.) The past two weeks have served a heft of studying and stress, but my roommates serve up at least ten times that in fun and laughter; I wouldn't have wanted to room with any other girls or any less people for this five week sleepover!
So here's to our fab squad, who turns out the lights when I go to bed early without even asking and lets me eat broccoli in our room. I think that accidentally requesting a quad was the best thing to happen to me for summer semester. I can’t wait to celebrate finishing our first tests and knowing each other for three weeks! (So girly, so sappy, so worth it!)
