One of my favorite celebs, Selena Gomez, has been my favorite since I watched her religiously on Barney years and years ago. She's a really good role model for young girls. She has a good head on her shoulders and seems to stay out of the spotlight when it comes to scandal. I think it's awesome that she has beaten the "Disney curse" and is still a successful actress as an adult.
Over the past week, I have been extremely disheartened by the cruelty of other people. She recently took a vacation to Mexico with some friends and tweets began to surface about her gaining a large amount of weight. That she shouldn't be posting pictures in a swimsuit because she was too fat. SELENA GOMEZ TOO FAT! If she is what the public wants to consider too fat, I don't even want to start collecting opinions on myself.
For as long as I have been a part of the social sphere, one thing has shocked me time and time again, and it's the callousness of people when it comes to commenting on others. People say things that they would never say to someone's face all the time. And I don't get that. I feel like words hurt more from people that I don't know, especially when it comes to the physical. Because one of your friends isn't going to tell you if you look ugly or if your eyes are a weird distance apart or if you really have gained that extra five pounds. They say you look perfect the way you are because they love and respect you, but a stranger has no love and no respect for you so their words can sometimes be truer and that only makes them hurt more.
I looked at pictures from Selena Gomez a couple years back and today, and she does not look any bigger to me, she looks like she has just developed a more mature body. No one looks like they are fourteen forever. I think there are so many people that are so insecure about their bodies already and to see someone who is generally seen as beautiful to be torn apart like that can't be a good thing.
At the end of the day, Selena didn't let the haters get her down. She still posted pictures in her swimwear while on vacation, even captioning one photo in particular with: "I love being happy with me y'all #theresmoretolove"
This just shows that she is happy with the body she has, and she didn't let the comments get to her. I feel that this is empowering—even though people tried to tear her down about her appearance, she rose above it—and I think this sends a strong message to other people. People are always going to talk about you no matter what you look like, or how successful you are, but inner happiness is the key. If you are happy with yourself and comfortable in your own body, that is the most important thing.
This summer, remember to be happy with the body that you have.
