I racked my brain and closet last week in search of something to wear for a jungle themed party. Suddenly, it hit me. It was a no brainer! I would dress like Eliza Thornberry, the protagonist from the cartoon show, The Wild Thornberrys. The only reason I explained the reference is because, apparently, some people don't know what that show is. I don't know why I know people who don't know what that is. Say know again. Know.
Anyway, I hoisted my hair up in braids, exhausted my pledge class's Groupme with requests for a yellow shirt and red bandana, and put my outfit together. I looked ***ing awesome. I think it was the glasses that did it, which is how I came up with the outfit idea in the first place. I ran out of my contact lenses and was forced to wear glasses (struggle #4), so I planned my outfit around that. It was witty and amazing and I was ready to introduce myself to people with the theme song that I already knew by heart, “Hi, I'm Eliza Thornberry, part of your average family…"
Well, ready until I started getting less than positive feedback from people who saw my friend's Snapchat stories of me dressed as Eliza. “Where is Arielle going dressed like that..?" they asked. I texted a few of my friends, “On a scale of 1-10, how aggressive is it if I dress like Eliza Thornberry for the jungle theme?" to which they responded with, “10/10" and “Who is that?"
The rush of excitement I had when compiling my costume quickly vanished as I let people's judgment get the best of me. Were other people even dressing for the theme? Would I stand out in a bad way? Is this too embarrassing? Slowly and begrudgingly, I took off the costume and let the questions I asked myself hinder my confidence. My friend attempted to persuade me into wearing it when she said, “Dude, I'm all about standing out and being silly! I'm wearing it if you don't. No lie, literally." I wanted to wear it so badly, but I couldn't bring myself to stand out, especially with a 10/10 rating on the aggressive scale.
Moral of the story is, kids, that if you want to dress like Eliza Thornberry for a jungle themed frat party, do it.
