I used to post quite often on my social media accounts. From everything from eating lunch with friends to studying for a test, I made sure my followers knew what I was up to.
But once I left for college, I decided to change that. You'd think I would want to post more often in college but instead, I post quite less. College is a busy and crazy time so of course, it would make for great content for any college students social media account.
All in all, I realized that social media is a huge waste of time.
The cold truth is, no one really cares all that much about what you're doing all the time.
Instead of talking to each other in between classes, we all become engulfed in our cell phones. From waiting for the elevator to standing in line for a coffee, people ignore one another and instead stare down at their screens.
Social relationships are suffering because of our addiction to social media. People have little to interest in getting to know each other outside of the internet.
At some point, I realized I don't want to live that way anymore.
I want to live in the moment and get to know the people around me. All people worry about nowadays is capturing the perfect moment and lose out on much of everything else that is going on around them.
I don't have to take a photo of every sunset I see or every hike I take or every person I hang out with.
You cannot believe only what you see through the phone screen. People only portray their best selves on social media. And we tend to ignore so much of the reality of what is happening around us.
On another note, social media isn't all bad. People can connect with their loved ones across the world which is pretty amazing. It's just when it engulfs us and our lives that it becomes an unhealthy obsession.
Life is so much more than what you see through a phone screen. We should value the world around us a little more.
