The Republican National Convention in a Nutshell

If I had only one word to describe the Republican National Convention, that word would be amazing. It's amazing that this many people could be brainwashed into voting for Donald Trump. It's amazing that this much hate could be rounded up into one place and no one ended up dead. It's amazing how many black people were in attendance. What wasn't as amazing was how the Republican party conducted there convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Instead of using the platform to lay out a concise plan for the future of America, the party chose to focus on scaring the hell out of the people, demonizing Hillary Clinton, and trying to convince the country, as well as themselves, that the only person who could save us from utter destruction is Donald Trump. All in all, the RNC was filled with the type of propaganda and fear mongering that the Republican party is known for.

I'll start the break down of this pitiful excuse for a convention with Melania Trump. The first night of the convention became completely engulfed with Mrs. Trump plagiarizing First Lady Michelle Obama's speech from 2008. While many Republicans were quick to defend Mrs. Trump, it was almost impossible to deny the facts. However, even though someone from Trumps campaign came forth and took responsibility for the incident, no one was fired or even reprimanded. This is where I get personally upset. Any college student knows that if you are caught plagiarizing, you will be given a zero, fail the class, and be publicly executed by the dean. That might be a slight exaggeration, but you will definitely receive punishment just like in the real world. Unless of course your Melania Trump, in which case you are praised. Also, I find it astounding that Republicans are willing to allow Mrs. Trump, an immigrant from Slovenia, to be the First Lady. Their disdain for immigrants has been quite intense over the past year. I wonder what gives her a pass? Her complexion, or the money she married into? Just a question.

Most of the convention had only two themes. America is in turmoil, and Hillary Clinton is the devil. Occasionally they would push a black man, a gay person, or a woman on stage to show some diversity, but then it was back to the scheduled program. A program that the crowd couldn't get enough of. To give you a good analogy, what the Electronic Entertainment Expo is to gamers and Comic-Con is to comic book fans, the RNC is to old racist white people. It's a place where they can gather, dance awkwardly, listen to like minded people, call for the head of Hillary Clinton, and freely use the “N” word (with a hard “er”). Okay, that was another exaggeration, but it's one I truly believe happens when you get that many people together who can remember the 1950's. The moments that should really cause concern are the feverish “Lock Her Up” chants from the crowd anytime the Democratic front runner was mentioned. It could be brushed aside as a harmless chant, but I'm pretty certain that that is what the beginning of a lynch mob looks like.

It would be wrong of me to talk about the convention without mentioning in detail a few of the speakers. Mainly the African-American pastor and sheriff who took the stage. First off, I'd like to label both these men as traitors to black people everywhere. Secondly, any pastor who tries to defend the holiness of Donald Trump without acknowledging his three marriages should really evaluate their pastor-hood. Furthermore, any member of law enforcement who willfully ignores the injustice that the police do to citizens on a daily basis should not be an officer of the law. We know that the lives of the police matter, but if you use the power of a badge to impose your will on others, you are a criminal, not an officer.

The convention wrapped up with Donald Trump accepting the nomination and giving a speech laying out his “plans” and promises to the country. And like most speeches, the plans and promises were mostly empty or full of lies. Although, that's not to say it didn't accomplish anything. The party is now more than ever ready to throw America into the toilet like a used sheet of Angel Soft and flush it. Which is to be expected from people this emotionally involved. As long as Trump is selling dreams, the Republicans will be buying in without a second thought. I just hope this gung-ho attitude doesn't send America back to the mid twentieth century. The 1950's might have been good for white men, but it sucked for the rest of us.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
