To President Trump Following Hurricane Maria, From A Proud Puerto Rican

I'm so disappointed in what you've done. But more specifically, in what you haven't done.

Dear President Trump,

I am astonished by your lack of support for a territory that you claim you have control over during Hurricane Maria.

Not that you haven't been cold-hearted to minorities in the past... I just figured you'd at least take care of an island of minorities that is still part of the U.S. According to CNN, "it wasn't until Tuesday, six days after Maria hit Puerto Rico, that Trump made a substantive-late-to-the-disaster-statement during a press conference with the Spanish foreign minister at the White House."

Not only did it take an enormously inappropriate amount of time to even deliver a speech about one of the largest disasters to hit P.R. It was done so incredibly ineloquently. You proceeded to acknowledge how P.R. is in an even worse state of financial crisis but instead of sympathizing, you had to insert the fact that P.R. is in debt to one of the largest money making industries of America: Wall Street.

I understand that while P.R. shouldn't deserve a wave of passage from its dues, it definitely doesn't deserve to be included in more stress from the president who is supposed to be the rock as to which it should look up to. Not only is Trump not able to be looked up to, he's actually the one who is refusing to allow aid to P.R. which is a huge slap in the face to the island.

According to CNN, Trump is purposely cutting off the island from outside aid as well as refusing to allow congressmen to travel to Puerto Rico.

Furthermore, Trump is refusing to suspend maritime restrictions for foreign vessels attempting to supply and aid the island because he believes the shipping industry would be offended by it.

However, he has waved those restrictions for Florida and Texas. Has Trump completely forgotten that Puerto Rico is as much of a part of the U.S. as a state is, but just in a different sense?

According to the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, more than 10,000 Puerto Rican's are currently on active duty as military personnel. Puerto Rican's are hard workers and are resilient fighters for the U.S. Military that Trump is so proud and financially supportive of.

We are not leeches and we can stand on our own two feet.

However, the aid from America could speed up that process and make it easier to be motivated to. So, Trump, I'm writing because I thoroughly believe that you are not in the position to refuse help for Puerto Rico by just throwing less than enough aid it's way. It's in need of support financially and morally, but it can do it without you. It is a strong island full of incredibly resilient and kind-hearted people, which is something that you just won't ever understand.

Sincerely,

A proud Boriquena

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
