Why Should We #PrayForIraq?

Dear America, I see humans but I see no humanity

Why Should We #PrayForIraq?

The recent bombing in Baghdad, Iraq have left people astounded by the sheer cruelty of ISIL and Iraqi government's negligence of its civilians. The bombing took place in a predominately Shia neighborhood that left more than 200 dead, many of whom were shopping in a mall for Eid and mainly included women and children. Although the attack targeted Shia Muslims in that area, most of the dead included Sunni Muslims and Christians. I ask myself why the media is staying silent for these attacks and America is not doing anything to help the situation in Iraq? The fact that the media is not saying anything while the situation in Iraq is only boiling shows the lack of humanity in our society. We simply do not care that innocent people are dying in another country because it does not involve them. I say, as humans, if one of us dies, then it is as if we all die with them. Killing one innocent person is a wound that every human should feel. The less we acknowledge the situation overseas, the less we are helping our fellow human brethren. Instead, we allow the attacks to happen. We allow ISIL to spread its wings over Iraq. But no matter what crime these "Muslims" commit, staying silent is far worse. By not condemning these attacks, we are secretly agreeing with ISIL for these barbaric crimes. We are not stopping them, but are not encouraging them either. We are a bystander to an issue that does involve us, not as Americans but as humans.

It is not only saddening that the bombing occurred in the holy month of Ramadan and so close to the celebration of Eid. Mothers and their children were out shopping for clothes to wear on this occasion while the bomb went off and left them dead. This is the deadliest bombing Karada, Baghdad has seen this year. Prime Minister Abidi denounced this attack, but the civilians say that he along with the rest of Iraq's government did nothing to prevent this bombing from taking place. The bombs passed checkpoints to enter the neighborhood.

Iraq has seen many dictators for the last fourteen hundred years. It has seen Saddam persecute Shias, ISIL raiding its borders,. Eid is a national holiday in Muslim countries, and is a celebration of the end of the month of Ramadan. Instead of celebrating with their families, these people are left buying coffins to bury them in. It is a celebration of an ISIS victory, because while the media stays silent, we are endorsing their behavior. We endorse the killing of children, the bombing of fathers and mothers, and the cries of orphaned children.

I just wish the United States would finally lend a helping hand to Iraq and save the people whose only crime is their belief system. Humanity fails the minute the rest of the world does not denounce the suffering of children and when protests and calls to action have to be made to have people be interested. This bombing is one of the many that occur on a nearly daily basis in Iraq, and the situation is not improving. Humanity is dead when people are not rushing to save children and women from hazardous conditions. Humanity is dead when the media stays silent over barbaric crimes such as these.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
