A Huge Thank You To The Best Parents
Ryan Schare

Dear Mommy and Daddy,

I’ve always known that I was lucky to have you both as my parents but I overheard a conversation on campus that made me want to put it in words. This girl was talking about how her father did not want her to become a biology major and was trying to push business on her because it was a sure fire way that she would make money. When I was applying to schools, there was never a time when you tried to sway my decision to go in as a psychology major, even though there are many other majors that would guarantee a job directly out of college. Similarly, you never tried to force a specific school on me, not instate nor the school that you both attended. My first year at UMD has been one of the most amazing experiences and I never would have had the opportunity without you. You support every decision I make and help guide me in the right direction regardless of the distance between us. Listening to some of my friends’ experiences with their parents has been an eye opening lesson. Some of their parents do not care what they do and do not help them with anything: from school work and packing to life planning and friend issues. I have realized that I am extremely lucky to have the relationship with the two of you that I do. I can talk to you about anything and everything where I have some friends who hide major parts of their lives from their parents.

Also, I cannot thank you both enough for putting me in a position where I do not have to struggle financially. I have many friends who cannot pay for the food that they want at a restaurant or the experiences that they want to have. I am extremely appreciative for the ability to live life to its fullest and not have to miss out on any experiences because I do not have the means to pay for it.

I have such a unique relationship with both of you and I strive to one day have the same relationship with my children. My friends love you both and see you as their second parents; there is nothing that makes me happier than the fact that everyone sees what I see. You’re both such amazing role models and have set such a great example for me. I know I don’t always say it but I am so thankful to have you both and I don’t know where I’d be without you. I love you!

Love,

Ryan

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
