How You Respond to a Situation Says a lot About You

Have you ever found yourself wondering what went so wrong within the past 24 hours, that your mind is on a constant replay? Examining every word that was said, every facial expression made, every action completed, and the meaning behind it all.

You waver with the idea that what happened was just a dream, while deep down you know it really happened, you just wished it hadn't. The mere thought of it makes your stomach weak, heart ache, chest tighten, and eyes fill with tears.

Your emotions are everywhere like dandelion seeds blown in the wind. You're Hurt. Angry. Confused. Embarrassed.

You don't even know where to begin. One moment everything was okay, then it wasn't. Like when an earthquake happens. No one sees it coming, but people still suffer the merciless wrath of mother nature. Likewise, you didn't see this coming, and now your world is upsidedown and you don't know what to do.

Replay. Replay. Replay. You think to yourself... Why Me? Was I too open? Was I too closed? Did I say too much? Did I say too little? Was I too much? Or was I not enough?

The list of questions goes on and on. Is this an episode of Cold Case Files? Because the more you investigate, the fewer leads you encounter, and the colder the case becomes. I mean surely a crime was committed, because your heart was stolen, then brought back to you broken.

That strong, beating, breathing heart that once worked so well is now fragile, beaten, and bruised. You question your capability of caring for your heart because you can't even protect it against an amateur thief.

How did this happen? What do I do now? Will this pain ever end?

You're going through a hard time. You don't know what to do. You're mentally, emotionally, and physically tired from trying to read between the lines of a situation you can't control. I get it. I've been there. I am there. We all have our own burdens to bear, and unfortunately, some are caused by others' inability to care for your heart because they lack the capability to care for their own.

Even still, find it in you to be kind. Find it in you to be compassionate. Find it in you to forgive.

Your feelings are real. They are important. They are valid. It is okay to be upset and hurt by the actions of another. It is okay to be confused. It's okay to lack the clarity you need to make your next decision.

But always remember, how you respond to a situation you can't control says a lot about who you are.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
