You’ve heard the saying “home is where the heart is.” Home is also where the sun never stops shining, where the beach is my dwelling place in the summer and where tourists flock because home is just that great. Charleston is my home and has my heart. Just miles from beautiful coastlines and downtown shopping, Charleston is a place known by many. If you’re a local, you know a couple of things about the city and surrounding towns. However, there’s a lot more that you have experienced compared to any tourist because living here is special to say the least. Here’s a couple ways to know you’re from “The Holy City” or, my favorite, Chucktown.

1. You have some sort of swimsuit tan line year round.

Don’t know how this is possible, but it’s a recurrence.

2. You know multiple creek names.

3. You love going to Second Sunday.

When the weather gets warmer in the spring, this is the best.

4. You know the non-tourist places to go at your local beach.

Whether you like going to IOP, Sullivan's or Folly, you know your way around. You know how to avoid the crowds and avoid wasting your money or time when finding parking.

5. You’ve heard of or attended Party in the Park.

Every Tuesday night in June you can hear incredible country artists perform for free underneath the Ravenel at the Mt. Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park.

6. You know a good Low Country Boil.

#Blessed.

7. You have walked the Ravenel Bridge.

8. You have taken at least one picture of the bridge during the day, sunset or night time.

I’m guilty of it. Our bridge is gorgeous so why pass up the opportunity?

9. You have at least one clothing item that says “CHS” on it to represent your city.

10. You love to say where you’re from.

11. You have been to James Island’s “Festival of Lights” every single year.

Every. Single. Year.

12. You know that Charleston was ranked as “Best City In The World” by Travel and Leisure.

And you love to tell anyone and everyone that asks you about Charleston.

13. The heat doesn’t faze you.

It’s still so stinkin’ hot here, but the reality is that with such thick humidity and harsh heat, you’ve become immune to it. You are cold blooded. You are invincible to the heat.

14. You can pick out the tourists from the locals.

This becomes hilarious over time.

15. You know how to shag dance.

Or at least attempted to at Shagging on the Cooper.

16. You are familiar with Sertoma Football.

Rivalry all for a good cause!

17. You’ve seen those guys that breakdance by Marion Square Park plenty of times.

Gettin’ krunk on King.

18. You expect schools to close if you see a single snow flurry.

19. You will ALWAYS be proud of southern hospitality.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
