What You Can Do Right Now To Help Orlando
Ashley Hoffman

As a student in Atlanta, far away from Orlando, I can’t help but feel helpless after what happened at The Pulse nightclub. I, of course, am grieving alongside of the LGBTQ+ community but I feel as though my words don’t carry as much weight as others' might. Through this helplessness, I have realized that words are oftentimes obsolete. In this situation, actions matter more. So, what can I do as a college student in a different city, to help the victims of this senseless attack?

There are a couple ways that you can help, even if you're a long way from Orlando:

1. Give blood.

In the wake of the situation, Orlando local officials are stressing the need for blood donations. The Red Cross has issued a statement saying that they will be providing assistance in helping with the amount of blood on hand. By going to The Red Cross website, and searching for a place near you to donate, you can make a direct impact for people in need in Orlando.

2. Offer support to your local LGBT+ community.

We are all grieving but the LGBTQ+ community has especially been affected by the events. As a society, we cannot erase that. We must acknowledge their suffering and stand with them during this time. You can do this by attending pride events. To find local pride events, head to Gay Pride Calendar. To a community that is so often marginalized and left unheard, support can mean the world.

3. Voice your opinion in a way that matters.

Facebook statuses and tweets hold no weight in the wake of a situation like this. Your opinion on social media means nothing without the proper force driving it. Speak up, but speak to the people that matter. Speak to your local congressmen and senators. If you don’t like the laws that they are passing regarding gun control, speak up.

People like Nicole Silverberg have made this simple, yet meaningful, task even easier. As found on The Huffington Post, Silverberg created templates for a letter or phone call to your state representatives. Simply fill in the blanks and let your voice be heard. Find the article along with the templates here.

4. Vote

A less direct, yet still meaningful, action can be taken at the polls. Listed in the chat below (thanks to Twitter user @AustenRisolvato) are all of the senators up for re-election in 2016 who oppose gun reform. Research the candidates that are opposing them and vote for them. Your opinion matters so make sure that it gets heard loud and clear.

5. Know the Facts

The tragedy that took place at The Pulse night club was a terrorist attack -- an attack fueled by hatred and homophobia. We need to view this horrible event as such -- an attack on the LGBTQ+ community.

As a college student in a different city, you are not helpless. Speak up, let your voice be heard to those who matter. Support your local LGBTQ+ community and support those in Orlando by donating blood.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
