We all follow the accounts. We all find amusement in the ridiculous, crazy things that are posted on all forms of social media with the hashtag #TFM or #TSM. We don't think anything of it. It isn't a big deal.
Not even close to being true.
Social media platforms like Total Sorority Move and Total Frat Move are destroying Greek Life and the perception that people have of it. It is the reason why parents don't want their sons and daughters to participate in organizations like ours. It sets the stage as an example of what Greek Life should be about: partying, hazing, and just being an idiot.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm about 1000000 percent positive that this is not the type of thing our founders wanted for each of our chapters. This is not what they envisioned when they sat down however many years ago you were founded and this is not how they wanted the letters that they worked so hard and fought for to be represented. They did not want to be tied to an organization that has been killing people left and right from things like ridiculous hazing “traditions” to getting so intoxicated you pass out and never wake up again. I don't blame them; when I think about what Greek Life is beginning to represent in our mainstream culture, it makes me sick. It makes me hate to tell people that I'm affiliated with other groups of people that don't share the same letters that I do, but support torturing their new members and being complete fools. That is not what I represent. That is not what I support. That is definitely not what my founders represented or supported.
If Total Frat Move and Total Sorority Move truly wanted to represent what Greek Life is about, they wouldn't post things like “Dear Standards, Sorry for partying” or how drunk they're going to be when they go to class. That is not what Greek Life is about. What might be more appropriate would be things about what makes each chapter unique and wonderful. They'd post things about how to make your ritual a part of your everyday life. They'd post things about how wonderful it is to be a sorority woman or a fraternity man because we create people that will change the world. We cannot bring change to this world if we keep letting people know that we think drinking, partying all the time, and hazing are okay. We will never be respected if we let people think that.
So, forgive me, TSM and TFM, but you are ruining the image of Greek Life and the ideals it's supposed to represent. My letters are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me, and I will be damned if I allow anyone in my chapter to tarnish those letters and all that they stand for because of some silly articles and tweets they read from you. You will soon make it so that people don't want to be greek anymore, and that's a shame, because what we REALLY stand for is absolutely wonderful.
