It is a universally acknowledged truth that getting enough exercise is important. Being active should be a priority. However, as college students, our academic and social obligations often seem much more important than going to the gym. It can be difficult to find the time in our busy schedules to dedicate solely to exercise, but that doesn't mean we should let that stop us. The following are some ways to trick yourself into living a more active lifestyle.
Put your gym clothes on in the morning, before you start your day. Do this a few times each week. This way, once you are done with all of your classes and meetings for the day, you won't have to go all the way back to your dorm room to change before heading to the gym. By waking up and dressing for the gym, you designate that day as a workout day.
Use the gym as an excuse to procrastinate. You know you are going to procrastinate, no matter what. Instead of watching Netflix for two hours, go to the gym. It is a much more productive way of avoiding your schoolwork.
Watch Netflix on the treadmill. Tell yourself you will run through two episodes of your favorite 30 minute show, or one episode of an hour long show. This way, you will want to keep running to find out what happens next! This also combines an unproductive method of procrastination with the aforementioned more productive use of your time.
Treat exercising like a homework assignment. You wouldn't neglect studying for an exam, so don't neglect being active!
Reward yourself. Treat yourself to a smoothie after you go to the gym. You've earned it!
Going to the gym can seem like a chore, but there are ways to trick yourself into seeing exercise as less of a burden and more as an essential part of life. Use the methods above to trick yourself into making exercise a part of your weekly routine!
