Your skin is your body’s largest organ. And it plays a vital role in your health, as the first layer of the body. It’s the first thing we see in the morning mirror, the first thing others notice about us, and it even tells its own story. It plays a vital role in protecting our other organs and is the gatekeeper to our insides. That’s why maintaining healthy skin is of the utmost importance. Yet, many of us overlook how to properly care for it.

If you’ve been neglecting your skin for too long it’s time to change things up. When you take care of your skin it will help to maintain overall better health. But if you’re unsure where to start there are some tips.

Here are a few ways how to take care of your skin in the new year.

Hydrate

One of the best ways to take care of your skin in the new year is to hydrate it. You might be thinking of hydration as water. And you’d be correct. Drinking ample amounts of quality H2O is a surefire way to keep your skin looking younger and plumper. Water helps skin, all over the body, to maintain good elasticity, which diminishes wrinkles. But another way to hydrate the skin is through moisturizers.

The right hydrating moisturizer will be fragrant-free and free of harsh chemicals. Essentially, you want a cream that contains a lot of (yes, you guessed it) aquatic properties but also has healing and soothing ones too. So, moisturizer and water combined will keep your skin looking flawless.

Be careful with razor burn

One of the worst feelings on your skin can be right after you get out of the bath or shower. Yes, we’re talking about razor burn. No matter what your body type, you likely have experienced that agonizing feeling that comes from a dull razor scraping your skin. From your armpits to your legs, every area of the body is at risk of this.

But one of the harshest places to have razor burn is in the pubic area. Which might make you wonder how to treat razor burn on pubic area? One way is to ditch the razor altogether and opt for either laser treatment or wax strips. This rids the worry of dull razors and could be the exact upgrade your pelvic area needs. A great way to take care of your skin in the New Year to be careful of razor burn is to either ensure you have fresh razors on hand at all times or ditch them completely.

Create a routine

The best way to effortlessly take care of your skin in the new year is to form a skincare routine. This should be done every morning and every night. It can look something like this: Wake up (or before bed), take a mild temperature shower, splash water on your face, apply sunscreen, apply moisturizing cream, and drink a glass of water.

When you create a routine that’s easy to follow every day, twice a day, you are ensuring that your skin becomes a priority. As you create this routine be sure to apply it to your entire body, not just your face. With many skincare routines, the face or hands is oftentimes the first things on people’s minds as the skin elsewhere gets overlooked. Try to avoid making this mistake.

Avoid the sun

The sun’s powerful rays can do more damage to your skin than you’d likely want to admit. And sadly all that damage is not always visible. When we think of sun damage the first thing that pops into our minds is sunburn–the obvious red, dried out, painful experience from being in the sun too long. But the sun does more than that. Without proper protection, even extended sun exposure in the winter months can wreak havoc on your skin. So, your best bet to take care of your skin in the new year is to apply proper coverage and protection to your skin to avoid the sun’s damaging effects.

Conclusion

With proper hydration, razor burn protection, a routine, and avoiding the sun you are on your way to healthier, stronger skin. And this skin your in will have you feeling more beautiful, powerful, and protected.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
