College is hard.
If you haven’t heard from everyone already, college is tough. I thought I was a pretty mature kid when I came to college. I was, but man, did I learn A LOT about people, myself, and life in general. What I’m about to tell you might shock you so, fair warning. One of the toughest things about college is that unless you love microwavable food, you actually have to make an effort, get out of bed, put shoes on, and walk to the dining hall. The food isn’t that great either but, you don’t want to starve. Life is all about sacrifice.
There are a variety of people.
Some of the people you will run into, you will just ask yourself, “Why?” and you know what? Sometimes there isn’t an answer. You just have to learn to accept people as they are and don’t judge a book by its cover.
Exams are stressful.
I was only in 12 credit hours this semester and only had 3 exams. But, oh man, was it stressful. Everyone realizes that they’re so close to the end of the semester that everything hits the fan. You’ll see people will a huge stack of books in the library “studying” aka sleeping. You won’t know what to do with yourself. Often times you’ll just realize that you’ve been staring into space for the past 3 hours. Just remember despite all that happens, you just need to remember what is important. Sometimes that means that you sit and watch your friend play video games for three hours just to get away from your roommate.
You will (maybe) miss your family.
I’ve always been super close with my family. But I was excited to start my own adventures. I have never missed my dogs, home-cooked meals, or just being able to go open your fridge more than I did after my first semester of school. Even though your mother may smother you at home, it is so worth the suffocating hugs and bloating from home-cooked meals. You won’t realize that if you want junk food, you have to go buy it yourself. You can’t just ask your mom to pick it up from the store for you.
Get Involved.
Whether you get involved in Greek life or another club, get involved! I know everyone tells you that over and over again. But do you really want to spend the whole day watching Netflix? As ideal as that sounds, it shouldn’t be an everyday thing. Go out and make some friends! They might be your best friends for the rest of your years away! Go do something. Some of the best memories happen at the strangest times.
Enjoy it!
Enjoy college while you can. It’s the best four years of your life but boy does it go by fast. Make friends! Make mistakes! Have fun!
