What is the difference between an extrovert and an introvert?
An extrovert typically gains energy from large social situations, is outgoing and enthusiastic, and generally good leaders. They think out loud and tend to be great public speakers. Introverts, however, are quiet, sometimes shy and avoid social outcomes. They work better alone and thrive this way. This group tends to be more reserved and calm, and are better listeners than they are speakers.
But it's possible to be both.
Some people might categorize themselves by referring to how they act when they are surrounded by different people. Perhaps when with friends, one feels more extroverted as compared to with new people, more introverted. Although, this is not ideally the best way to classify yourself as either-or, since this is typically how most people would think. Instead, you can associate one of these titles to yourself by answering a few simple questions.

But for those of us that fit into both of these categories, answering the questions above might be difficult because both answers apply to us. It can be challenging for an intro-extrovert to manage when to indulge in a more outgoing personality rather than when to lay in bed and say "I'll go out next Friday instead."
First things first, in a situation where you might be both, it's essential to figure out if you are more introverted than extroverted, or vice versa. For those of us that are both, but more introverted:
GO OUT! It is so important to get out of your room and go explore and get involved. Going to events that are hosted around town, hitting the movies, taking a new art class or even getting together with some friends to study, rather than alone, a few times a week can really make an impact on your personality and get you more comfortable being out socially. Who knows, you might find a new activity that you'll want to pursue more often!
MEET PEOPLE! The issue with being introverted is that we tend to keep our circles small. Although this can be a great call to ensure safe feelings and less drama, having a few more select friends that are always available to get together on the weekends or who encourage you to leave your room and experience something new are key to opening up and making connections! Having some effortless friendships and distance when needed is a great idea.
EASE INTO IT! Sometimes it can be difficult to leave what you are comfortable with and explore newer situations. So, what you can do to prepare is use your old habits first! Perhaps a few hours before attending a party that you're nervous about, or before going out with friends, watch a few episodes of your favorite show in bed or pursue a habit that makes you feel safe and relaxed. This can ease your mind and set you up with a clear head and get you ready for a great night.
For those of us that are both, but more extroverted:
RELAX! This might sound crazy, but not every night has to be a party! Taking a weekend to relax and making some time for yourself can be great way to explore who you really are and give you a clear mindset. Sit down and have a "self-care" night and watch some movies; do something that you can enjoy without other's company. This is one way to ensure your independence and find ways to rely on yourself rather than somebody else.
TRY SOMETHING SCARY! Always being around a big group can be fun and exciting, but at times, you might get overwhelmed by the constant plans and busy schedules. Taking an evening to go out to dinner with just you or shopping alone can be very powerful and liberating.
INDULGE IN NEW HOBBIES! Being an extrovert usually means you have a lot of energy and love excitement. But there can be other ways to release those feelings without leaving your room! Starting an every-day journal can be a great way to begin. By sitting down and practicing patience, you might find that you have a lot to say and don't need to go out to say it. Start easing your mind and trying new things like yoga or meditation throughout the day to relieve stress and welcome a calm aura into your life.
Every person differs, and if these ideas don't speak to you, do your own research! Find some new ways to explore outside of what you're used to.
