It's all about your mindset.

With the constant hurdles life throws our way, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and let the difficulties become the center of our focus. However, concentrating on only the negatives often makes the situation worse. Rather than fixating on our struggles and feeling down on ourselves, we should work to keep a more upbeat outlook. So, here are some simple ways to ensure you keep a positive mindset.

1. Surround yourself with positive people and a positive environment.

The people you choose to surround yourself with have one of the largest impacts on you and your well-being. Living with or hanging around negative people will only breed negativity. As social beings, we are easily influenced by others and can be dragged down by those who are pessimistic. Instead, purposefully seek out others who are positive and you too will begin to embrace their optimistic mentality. Happiness is truly contagious.

2. Slow down.

When things become stressful with a thousand items on our lists, we can start to feel negative that it all won't get accomplished. We rush through our projects and chores just to get them done rather than caring about the finished product. Think about if what you are worrying about will matter in ten years or even a month. Instead of letting the chaos get the best of us, take a deep breath and stop to think. Refocus your energy on what’s truly important and the quality will show in your results.

3. Take care of your health.

Remembering to treat your body well will leave you with a lasting positive impact. Exercising regularly, eating healthy, and getting a good night's sleep will provide you with a sense of revitalization and help clear your mind from negative thoughts. The mind and the body are interconnected, so maintaining your physical health will prevent any negativity from harboring in your thoughts.

4. Be grateful.

Focusing on everything you have to be thankful for will stop you from centering all attention on negative thoughts. When you practice gratitude in all aspects of your life you become happier and healthier and, therefore, more positive. Take the time to think about what you are grateful for in your life and jot it down. This exercise has known lasting benefits that will spread positivity throughout your life.

It’s easy to get caught in a downward negative spiral when all seems to be going wrong. So next time you feel swept up in the chaos of your stressful life, remember to try and stay positive despite the difficulties that may face you.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
