It's official: SGA Elections are getting underway, and the deadline to sign up is quickly approaching.
The new SGA election rules lay out a few simple steps to running in any of the SGA races, so we've packaged them together here for your convenience.
1. Attend our interest session and open house.
The Court will hold an official interest session on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Law School 275. Here you can ask the Supreme Court any questions you may have about the process.
SGA will also hold an open house on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 11-1 in the SAC's Cardinal Game Room (W306) for you to meet current officeholders and find out more about the jobs you are running for. Free Fazoli's will be served at this event.
None of the interest sessions are mandatory, but asking questions never hurts.
2. Download the candidacy form from the SGA website here.
This is a straightforward form that gives the SGA Supreme Court and the Dean of Students any information they need in determining your eligibility for SGA office. In it you indicate what office you'd like to run for, agree to follow the election rules, and agree to return a Campaign Value Report (CVR) at the conclusion of the campaign. As a bonus, you can write a brief bio of yourself to be placed on the SGA website.
3. Return the form to the Dean of Students' Office (SAC W301) and email it to smpenn04@louisville.edu.
This may seem like a straightforward step, but it is important that you return the form in physical and digital form so you can be confirmed as a candidate. You will be contacted with a confirmation that you are an official candidate after you turn in the candidacy form.
4. Start campaigning Feb. 3.
The fun part of this is devising a campaign strategy for yourself! Within the rules, you can put up signs, make buttons, and recruit supporters in the lead up to the election. Reaching out to your fellow students is an important part of SGA, so the campaign should be great practice! The campaign will last through the election days on Feb. 15-18.
5. Return a CVR.
A CVR is a list of everything you spent on the campaign to ensure that you kept within the given spending limits. A detailed example can be found in the election rules. It is due at noon on the final day of campaigning.
The SGA Chief Justice, who will be available to answer questions throughout the whole process, also offered some details to students over email:
Remember to read up on the full election rules, as this is not a comprehensive list of everything you need to know.
