How To Pick The Perfect Major

How To Pick The Perfect Major

Dear lovely college student,

Should I switch my major to English? Should I chase my dreams of being a teacher? Should I major in dance? Or become a chef? I know I know, this goes through your head quite often. You’re supposed have the perfect response every time someone asks “So, what’s your major?” But what if you don’t know what you really want to do? What if you’re confused on if this is something you're truly passionate about? There’s a perfect solution to this extremely annoying dilemma.

I know what you’re feeling. It’s OK to be confused on if your declared major is the perfect one for you. Last year during this time I constantly thought about if my chosen major (community health education) was right for me. Yes, I love health and fitness, but that wasn’t the only thing that I was passionate about. I was also interested in business, culinary arts, dance, teaching, and psychology. I was dedicated to find my one true calling. But after my frenzy of trying to find the perfect field, I realized something -- I don’t need to be worrying if I’ve picked the perfect major because it really doesn’t matter.

The truth about picking the perfect major is this: just choose a major that you’re relatively interested in. Most likely, it won’t be what you’ll even end up doing for the rest of our lives. Of course we all have multiple passions and career ideas but it’s a waste of time to worry and contemplate about if you chose the right major. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to try your best and put in 100 percent effort in whatever you decide on.

Adding value and determination into your choices opens opportunities. For example, if you love to travel, work sales, do Zumba, and talk to people -- you probably have a lot of careers in mind that’ll fit that category. But it’ll be near impossible if you constantly think about which one is actually the right one to choose. All you have to do is choose one thing and be great at it. If you get bored, switch it up. For example, start off as a Zumba instructor and move on to be a travel writer once you make enough money from your studio. Easy.

The hardest part is just starting. You just have to go for it. Don’t try to over analyze your decisions. Do your research. Choose. Put in hard work and passion. You’ll begin to see so many opportunities blossom right before your eyes. This advice doesn’t have to be just about picking a major, it can go with any big decision in your life. One of my favorite quote is from a man by the name of Matt Hussey: “Don’t worry about which mountain to climb. Just start climbing.”

With love,

Bella.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
