Owning a pet can be a challenge, and does take a lot of time. But it is so worth it. Being a pet owner teaches you to care for someone that is solely dependent on you. It teaches you responsibility and how to love. Here's a how-to guide for owning a pet.
1. Before you decide to get a pet, make sure that you're going to have enough time to care for them. A pet is a big commitment. If you're looking for a pet that takes less time to care for opt for something like a hamster or rat.
2. Owning a pet can be expensive. Buying food, treats, bedding, litter boxes, puppy pads. The list goes on and on. Make sure you're prepared for a major financial investment before adopting. (But it's still so worth it, I mean look at these pups.)
3. Be aware that you're going to have to take time out of your day to take your pet out to go to the bathroom. (If it's a cat, you're going to have to clean the litter box.)
4. You're going to have to train your pet as well, and that takes a lot of time and persistence (they aren't going to get it the first time you show them).
5. Don't keep your pet locked up all day. If you don't have time to give them the attention and loving they need, please reconsider adopting when you have more free time to care for your pet.
6. Have patience. Animals don't speak English. They're trying their best to listen to you but please don't raise your voice at them. Be kind, supportive and encouraging.
7. Your pet loves you. Remember that.
8. They can be a pain in the butt, but they're worth all of the time, effort and money.
9. They will ruin something at some point. Whether they pee on your favorite shirt or tear up your favorite pair of shoes. They don't know any better!
10. If you're planning on getting a puppy, or a newborn kitten (or any young animal) be ready to get frustrated with them but please don't just give up. They take more time than older animals, because they're new to this world, you have to teach them everything. (But IT'S WORTH IT.)
11. Remember this: your pet may only be a small part of your life but for them, you are their entire life, their entire world. Make their life as happy and love-filled as you can!
12. Many shelters now-a-days are kill shelters, meaning animals that aren't adopted are put down. So if you do plan on adopting, I urge you to at least consider going to a shelter to adopt.
