“So, what are you planning on studying in college?”
If you just got flashbacks of getting bombarded with that question a million times in high school, I’m sorry. I’m even more sorry if you didn’t know the answer to the question and felt like you needed to choose something before it was too late. Choosing what you want to pursue for college (and the rest of your life) is an overwhelming decision to make. Sometimes, people just know exactly what they were meant to do. Others, on the other hand, may need to change their major several times before finding the one that suits them. If you’ve already declared a major, here are some signs that it’s the right one for you.
You enjoy the classes: If you actually enjoy sitting through a tedious lecture about topics related to your major, then that’s a good sign that it was meant to be. Listening and partaking in class discussions may even seem fun if you genuinely like what is being taught. There may be a few classes that are required for your major that might suck (inevitably), but overall, you should enjoy the subject.
You can see yourself pursuing a career related to your major: Liking a subject and wanting to have a job related to that field aren’t necessarily the same thing. If you love learning about math but can’t see yourself doing equations for the rest of your life, maybe you should pursue something else.
You aren’t influenced by other people: I know a lot of people have family or friends that tell them what majors are and aren’t a good idea. A lot of the times, people who study a field solely for the fact that someone else pressured them to are not happy in the long run. Know who you are and know what you like. The opinions of others shouldn’t come before your own because it’s your life, not theirs.
You’re passionate about what it entails: When someone asks you why you chose the major that you did, it's sometimes hard to put it into a simple explanation. Whatever your answer may be, it should really mean something to you. Feeling proud of your major is definitely a good indicator that it’s something you should continue to follow.
If you find yourself pursuing a major that you’re having second thoughts about, there’s no shame in it. There isn’t a specific timeline to follow when it comes to achieving your degree. Whether you stick with one major or change it ten times, all that matters is that you’re content with your decision in the long run.
