How to be Happy

How to be Happy
Alexis Williams

Happiness is easy. But so is a pessimistic attitude.

Happiness is just a way of life. I've found that if you just forget about the dumb stuff that's making you mad and just laugh you're already half way to being happy.

I'm happy when I'm surrounded by my family or in bed with a really fuzzy blanket. I'm happy when I'm singing in the car with my best friend and when I'm sitting next to my boyfriend watching an old sci-fi movie.

I'm happiest during the winter. Where I can wear 13 layers of clothes and still not get hot. I can't help but smile when I'm walking and the snow crunches under my feet and who doesn't love hot chocolate. I'm happy when I can hear my sister cracking up when we go snow tubing.

I'm happy around cats and dogs and fish — basically any animal. I'm happy and content walking around an aquarium. I'm happy when I'm driving to my favorite restaurant. I'm happy when I can hear my little cousin singing in the bathtub. I'm happy when it smells like a home cooked meal.

I'm happy when I'm singing in church. I'm happy singing anywhere. I'm happy in a warm shower or whenever I see a really big garden full of sunflowers. I'm happy when I'm swimming in the ocean and when I'm eating s'mores around a fire. I'm always happy in a hammock, on a boat, or sitting in a rocking chair.

I'm always happy when I can sleep in. I'm happy when I eat chocolate and, really, who isn't? I'm happy when I get that perfect messy bun, even though it took a good 67 tries before that. I'm happy whenever I see laves that I can step on and whenever I walk into a store that has old antiques hanging on every single space on the wall.

Bad days are inevitable. If you say you've never had a bad day, you're a liar. And a bad one at that. You'll cry and cry and cry some more over something ridiculous like dropping your Lays chips on the floor, and to be honest there were barely any in the bag to begin with. Be an optimist, those chips probably weren't going to be as good as the Skittles you have in the snack drawer.

Happy is a state of mind. It isn't difficult to have. You can choose to have it present in your day to day life. You can see the good or you can see the bad. Let's face it, everyone struggles with it. It's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Just take some time to think on it, don't sit in that state of mind. Think on the things that keep you going, anything that makes you smile. Maybe it's that ice cream in your freezer that you're going to devour when you get home or your pajamas just waiting to be worn even though it's only 2 in the afternoon.

Just be happy. Think on it. Act on it. Make it happen. Focus on the good. A day might not be great, but there is always something good about it.

"And just remember, you're never fully dressed without a smile."

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
