Isn’t it funny that writers block never truly seems to set in when you aren’t writing anything of importance. It only seems to happen when you sit down at 11 o’clock at night getting ready to crank out a ten page essay due the next day or when you are trying to write the research paper that will make or break your college career. Writers block is often unavoidable because we are humans and we get caught up in something or we get worked up over the tiniest problem that sends our brain into freak out mode. We cannot fight it when it comes, but we can do our best to tap into that creative flow that is stopped up in our brains somewhere. Here are a few tips to help you get over your writers block and to weave a beautiful string of words together to help you on your way.
1.Stare at the blinking cursor.
The pattern can be hypnotic, if you stare at it long enough an idea is bound to enter your mind.
2.Get useless advice from fellow writers.
It’s worth a shot. Maybe something they say will trigger a memory in your brain and you will be up and thinking again!
3.Ask Siri.
Siri may be snarky, but every once in a while does have some good ideas.
4.Throw glitter at people.
Whether you do this secretly or openly, it’s fun to watch your victim’s face as they realize they will be combing glitter out of their hair for the rest of your life. I don’t know how this will fix writer’s block, but it will make you feel better.
5.Make a list of fun words.
This can be a helpful technique especially if the words can be used in your writing.
6.Start an inspirational Pinterest board.
Come on, we’ve all done it.
7.People-watch in spy mode from behind a plant.
Obviously this is for research purposes.
8. Do yoga!
Helps blood flow to the brain or something… I personally don’t do yoga, but it really seems to work for some people.
9.Try to lick your elbow.
Let’s call this a creative break.
10.Download a new game app on your phone.
This can be a dangerous way to break free from your writer’s block because the right game will distract you. Avoid this if you are on a time constraint.
11.Walk aimlessly through the hallways and quack at people who look at you funny.
This also works well paired with some skipping and small bursts of running.
12.Call your Mom.
Or your Dad, Grandma, sister, brother, Great Aunt Harriet twice removed...
13.Go online shopping, fill your cart and don’t buy anything.
Maybe one day...
14.Watch a TV episode.
...Or twenty and push your paper off some more and then you won’t have time for writer’s block!
15.Build a blanket fort.
I have tried this and it was not successful, but I had a great story to tell afterwards.
16.Solo dance party.
Crank up your jams and let your dance moves be known to the world!
17.Relive the music from your childhood.
Memory lane is a beautiful place.
18.Color a picture.
Coloring is all the rage, especially with the new adult coloring books
19.Clean out your inbox.
A long and tedious task, but you will feel like a brand new person afterwards.
20.Go through Facebook friends.
Haven’t talked to you in seven years? Goodbye!
21.Get a haircut.
Try a new look, talk to your hairdresser and get some ideas from them.
22.Take on the persona of someone new for at least an hour.
Put yourself in a different mind space for a little while. Get out of your own head and push past your block. It could be quite the adventure.
23.Do your laundry.
Clean underwear can work miracles!
24.Bake some cookies.
Cookies. Duh
25.Write a list about how to get over writer’s block.
Well, I guess I can write my research paper now...
