How to Fall in LA

The best way to experience fall in the city where seasons don't quite exist.

How to Fall in LA

Living in the city of angels is great and all, except the fact that we don't get to experience the definitive changing of seasons. Though this reality allows for beach and hike days all year long, some of us may be yearning for jumping in a pile of red and orange leaves or experiencing chilly sweater weather. For those of you who are obsessed with the season of fall as much as I am, here's how to make the most of your autumn in LA.

(From the one time I got to experience a real fall in Washington, DC)

1. Get lit (by lighting some scented candles)

Personally, I am a huge fan of scented candles because they really set the mood for the fall time. Scents like pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, and firewood can all help to evoke the feeling of fall in the convenience of our own homes. Candles can definitely let us pretend that the season is changing (while it's really not).

2. Wear a sweater anyway

In LA, many of us are prone to freaking out and putting on a sweater when it hits 65 F degrees during the day (I'm victim to this as well). Even if the sun is out a little, embrace that inner fall in you to wear your favorite sweater anyway. There's also the option of wearing a thick flannel, which is a wardrobe essential for most people. Add some warm accessories like a scarf or beanie to spice up your outfit too, because why not?

3. PSL it up

At this time of year, many coffee shops come out with specialty drinks, like pumpkin spice latte or salted caramel mocha. If you're not into coffee, you can't go wrong with hot cocoa. Warm drinks can warm up both your body and soul as you get into the spirit of autumn.

4. Decorate, decorate, decorate

You can decorate your living room, bedroom, bathroom, any room essentially with fall items like pumpkins, colorful leaves, and candles. Many stores offer very inexpensive items for decorating or if you're feeling adventurous you can always DIY.

5. Go to a patch

Since Halloween and Thanksgiving both fall into autumn (see what I did there?), carving pumpkins with some friends may be a good way to spend some quality time together. For many families, going to a pumpkin patch is an annual tradition. Even around LA, there are several pumpkin patches that are perfect for a day of fall fun

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
