How To Be The Best Wedding Photographer You Can Be

My first wedding photography gig and how to be a photographer for a wedding day.

I shot my first wedding a week ago. It was an interesting experience and more importantly what I needed for confidence. I was so anxious about it beforehand because I didn’t want to mess it up for anyone. Everyone there expects the photographer to make them look good. Fortunately, it was my sister’s wedding and I knew what she liked and could work with her on what she wanted photos of. If you ever have to shoot a wedding here are a few things to remember.

Preparation is everything, have a list of what to shoot and who to take photos of. Always think about what the bride and groom want. Also, remember that the more you communicate, the better. That is a huge thing that you can’t forget and it isn’t easy-- you have to put in the effort.

Doing a bridal shoot ahead of time is a great idea because it means less work on the day of the wedding. You also can get shots that you otherwise would not have enough time for.

Try to have as many shots as possible done before the ceremony-- as it will make everyone happier (no one wants to wait to eat and go to the reception). This will also mean you don’t have to run everyone down right after the ceremony.

Don’t be discouraged if a guest thinks they look ugly in your photos. If someone at the wedding insists that they look terrible, there really is nothing that you can do. I have had people tell me how ugly they are in this photo or that and it makes you as the photographer feel guilty, but it isn’t your fault. Some people have insecurities that you can’t do anything about it.

Make sure that you have back up memory cards. This one is huge because I ended up shooting more photos than I thought I would. Just be smart and have equipment ready to go the night before.

Have a few poses that you know you will use no matter what. This will make it so much easier!

Details, details, details! Shots of decor or hairpieces are always a great idea. Everyone will look back and be so glad you have those shots. Plus, those shots usually look pretty.

Be nice! Smile and be as kind as you can. This will make people more comfortable for photos and it really is the right thing to do.

Here are some shots that I have from this past week:

(Oh and always have some traditional shots before you go into the fun stuff. These are the ones that will most likely be framed and hung on walls.)

Use the environment to get shots that will remind the bride and groom of where their wedding was.

Be creative and have some fun. Also, use the veil if the bride has one!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
