When we were kids we used to believe that having an abundant amount of friends is how we would become successful in life. However, as we grew older, we then realized that all we wanted was that one friend who we truly cared about and would die for. We wanted that one friend who understood all of the different languages that we speak depending upon what mood we were in. We wanted a person who would tell us we are crazy, but love us at the exact same time.
1. They accept you for who you are.
Being in a relationship we always assume that this person is going to change for us. What we did not know is our friendship with our best friend is one of the strongest relationships we will ever have because we know that they will always accept us for who we are. You should never have to change yourself for anyone and your best friend will be the first one to tell you that. A real friend is the kind of person who truly knows all of your darkest corners, but still loves you even more because of them.
2. And they are always there to listen.
No matter the time, the day, or the place a real friend will listen to whatever is bothering you at the moment. They know when they need to be serious or when to just comfort you and give you loving advice. A real friend will drop everything to listen to something that may seem insignificant, but they know that it is important to you.
3. Because you are a team.
Your friend does not want to go somewhere because a specific person is there then you don’t go. Your friend wants you to join them at midnight for a late IN-N-OUT run? You go because you both love food. Your friend needs you to bring her gelato because she is having a bad day? You do it. You would do anything and go anywhere with them because you know they would do the exact same thing for you.
4. So they will always make time to check in with you.
No matter what comes up in their life, they still make you a priority. Even though they are really busy they still know how to make time for you. Whether it is being in different countries, being in a new relationship, or venturing out on a new career opportunity, they know to still make time for their best friend.
5. And be all excited for all your accomplishments.
Your friend will be the first to shout to the entire world that their best friend received an award and you could not be any happier. You know that they have worked hard and you genuinely could not be any more proud. You also show them wonderful support because you know that whenever you reach a stepping-stone that they will be the first person to be happy for you too.
6. But you are not scared to tell one another the cold, hard truth.
They will tell you if you need to maybe run a few extra miles at the gym. They will be honest with you and tell you, “Yes, that dress makes you look fat.” They will tell you when your breath smells because they know you are seeing your special someone later. They will tell you when you need to get over something and to just let it go. Your best friend is the person who is going to tell you what needs to be said—because at the end of the day, no one else will.
7. As well as being there for each other at your worst times.
No matter the issue or circumstance, your best friend is always going to be there for you, because that is what a real friend does. They will hold you and comfort you because they know that you need it. A true friend is the one who tells you that you have a booger hanging from your nose because you have been crying so much. Your best friend hates seeing you so distraught, so the least that they can do is have the comfort of knowing that you are not alone because they are with you.
8. They accept and support that you are going to grow and change.
This statement itself in any friendship is really crucial. Friends come and friends go every single day. However, a real friend is going to stick with you until the very end. They accept what you want to do in life and support you every step of the way. They don’t use the “you’ve changed” excuse, because they know that in order to grow, change needs to happen.
9. And they give you the freedom to have more friends even though they want you to themselves.
They know that you have more friends than just them and they accept it. They let you have the freedom to have your own life and be who you are as an individual. They know that those other people in your life make you who you are and that is what they love about you. They accept this, because at the end of the day they know whom you are going to tell everything to.
10. But you know at the end of the day they are always going to be there.
Friends will continue to weed out of our lives, but our best friend is going to be there until the day we die. They are the person who is going to encourage you, comfort you, love you, and propel you into the future. We would not be who we are without them. Your best friend also knows we need them, so why would they leave? We know that we will always be there for each other because we know if we aren’t, then we won’t have a maid of honor at our wedding one day.
