We live in a world where many times we are cold hearted and unwelcoming to strangers, judgmental of those who are different than us and are intrigued by the failures of others, wanting success only for ourselves. We throw shade at one another and many of us tend to live our lives holding meaningless grudges until time comes to an end. We live in a world that focuses on the negative, rather than focusing the positive aspects of life.
The nightly news, for example, consists of headlines regarding violence, death and other tragic stories — the traumatic headlines are endless. That’s why we must choose to live life optimistically, being open to both the yin and the yang, as there will always be the good and the bad in life as the two complement each other. We must also choose to be kind to one another as we live in this unkind world.
If I’m ever to be found giving sass to someone, pouting with my arms crossed over my chest in disagreement, or holding my nose up high to someone who I think I’m better than, I hear my mother's voice in the back of my head. Growing up, if I was ever in a mood, my mother would tell me what my grandpa would always tell her, “it doesn’t cost anything to be kind.” Those words stuck with me throughout the years as I’ve come to realize that in life, you get what you put in.
There are many people in this world who will try to bring you down, mock you, constantly test your patience, and attempt to hurt you with through their actions or harsh words. It’s at this time that you mustn’t stoop down to their level, but be the bigger person and simply kill them with kindness. We see this in Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Although it doesn’t cost anything to be kind, it will cost everything when you are not kind to others. Being kind to others will always matter and result in a positive change in the world — you can be that change.
Why are people mean, rude, or unkind to one another? We may never truly know since there are various reasons. However, I’ve realized that for many, jealousy is the root of their hatred and problems. As for others, it could be due to past experiences, family issues at home or other sensitive subjects. As cliché as it may sound, we should never judge a book by it’s cover. It’s important to always be kind to others, even if they aren’t deserving of your kindness, because you never really know what struggles they may be battling at home or within themselves. Simply saying hello to a stranger as you walk down the street, holding the door for an elderly woman at a restaurant or giving spare change to someone who’s in need are random acts of kindness that truly go a long way.
With that being said, don’t chase people in life. Rather, be an example and attract them by working hard and simply being yourself. The people who belong in your life will come find you and stay. Just do your thing and be kind. Do good and good will come to you.
