If you watched every episode of every season of "Gilmore Girls" like I have, then you know that guys always loved and chased after the mother and daughter duo and for good reasoning.
Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory are characters who embody confidence, independence and intelligence. The characters and the show as a whole are two simple reasons why they are making a 2016 comeback. From season one with Rory in high school, to season seven where she has graduated college and chosen her own life path, fans have grown with Rory and Lorelai. The writers, producers, and creators of this series really did an exceptional job of creating a fictional world that is relatable and endearing. They helped their fans learn something.
Amidst the drama and new love interests every other week, they always choose a lesson to be taught in each episode. The lesson of putting yourself and your needs first being a concept for the series as a whole. Whether it was quirky mom Lorelai lusting after a hot school teacher, or can't-keep-her-head-out-of-the-textbook Rory dealing with her first real boyfriend, they always managed to do one thing: put themselves and their needs first.
One of the most memorable times Rory Gilmore put herself first was in one of the last episodes of season seven with then boyfriend Logan. He was the rich party boy in college that fell for all the good in Rory. He changed his ways to become a better man for Rory, and boy weren't all of us female fans jealous because what a HUNK! After graduation Logan asks Rory a very important question, one that almost every viewer expected her to say yes to, but the element of surprise and the drama can never end. Rory decided to make the decision that benefited her lifestyle needs the most. She chose to love herself.
Lorelai Gilmore used her independent, sexy, and confident charm to get men to fall in love with her left and right. One love interest named Chris, who happens to be Rory's father, was that of a complicated one. Throughout all of the seasons, Lorelai and Chris tend to go back and forth with each other. Lorelai has to make the choice between trying to fix things with Chris to keep her family in tact, or being selfish and going after what she wants. She, in the end, chooses to love herself.
Rory Gilmore is actually the inspiration to me becoming a writer/future journalist. She never quit. She always reached for her dreams. She did whatever she could to get where she wanted to be. Lorelai Gilmore reminds me of a quirkier version of my own mother. She was always there for Rory, and even all of the friends and people she cared for in her life. She struggled, and then overcame. She persevered and made her own dreams come true. Women like the Gilmore girls, even if they are just characters, are women that every young girl should aspire to be.
With whatever the new episodes bring, I am excited to learn and grow with my favorite fictional characters. I hope they still love themselves as much as I love them and everything they stand for.
