Whether you live in a dorm and are regretting your decision right now or you're about to go into your freshmen year of college, sometimes you and your roommate just cannot see eye to eye. Personalities may clash and boundaries may be pushed but the sad truth is that it happens to many people when put in such a small area. It may be painful and difficult but there are some steps you can take to make you and your roommates home away from home more bearable.
Invest in Good Headphones
This is such an important aspect of dorm life, whether you enjoy your roommate or not. Having a decent pair of headphones will hopefully block out the noise that your roommate is making and will put you in your own world when you need it the most. Regardless if you're doing your homework or you just need some time to yourself, headphones will be your best friend. There are some decently cheap headphones from Amazon or try Best Buy.
Stay at Friends Places Constantly or Try to Be Out of the Room
This is the easiest way to get out of the room if you're not at class or extracurricular activities. It's also fun to get away from your room, be around people that you enjoy and have fun. If you don't have a place to go to and you just aren't feeling like being around your roommate, a good place to also go to is the library. It hits two birds with one stone, you get to study while being away from your roommate. Going to a friends room or somewhere else will help you to get away from your problem of a roommate.
Think of Exit Strategies
Before you get into a bad situation that you wish you hadn't gotten into, think of how you can escape it. If they bring someone that you don't like over or they want to talk about their world of problems, it may be sad to say but think of a way that you can slip out of the conversation to avoid dealing with the issues. It'll save you from feeling too angered in the long run and also hopefully get you out of the room that is bothering you.
Talk To Your Roommate
This may seem like the most comprehensive of the ideas but this can be the most difficult for some. While avoiding the task of talking to them about the problems that must be addressed can be easier, sometimes just talking about it is the most efficient thing. They may not be your best friend and it may be a difficult conversation but talking through your issues can be beneficial to living in the same space.
If all else fails... talk to your RA
Your RA or resident assistant is there for a reason, use them! They have all of the helpful information that will help you deal with that topic of your roommate. They'll help you address your problems because they've gone through intensive training to be able to do this job.
Just remember that living in this tiny 10x10 dorm is temporary. You'll probably be living with your friends next year and hopefully, the semesters will go by quickly. Good luck!
