Spoilers ahead! Do not read before seeing the movie!
I am a fan of movies. Explosions, emotions, superheroes, villains, warriors, soldiers, comedians and musicians, I love everything about movies. I love Marvel. I love DC. So, let's just say I have adjusted to seeing good movies that get pretty terrible ratings and a lot of hate since I don't bandwagon or sell out to one team.
The "Suicide Squad" trailers had me pumped. The soundtrack was amazing. So, when I decided to go see it, I checked the ratings on RottenTomato, IMDb and MetaCritic. I was surprised to find 27 percent, 75 percent, and 46 percent ratings. Normally, IMDb tends to run higher ratings since it dives more into the acting, cinematography and more subtle visual and storytelling elements. But, a 27 percent on RottenTomato really says something. I was skeptical. Somehow, RottenTomato was wrong. This movie, in my humble opinion, is a solid seven-out-of-ten. And so, here are my top five reasons why "Suicide Squad" deserves better reviews.
1. Batman! Freaking Batman!
That's right. Batman. I do not care that he barely contributes to the story line and is only really there to advance the plot into a setup for the next movie release. Batman makes a few appearances and is entirely glorious. Great movie. Much bat. Very man. I am 100 percent sure he is setting up for "Justice League," but whatever. No big deal. I sat in my seat and giggled with joy as Batman beat the snot out of Deadshot for about 15 seconds in an alleyway.
2. The Joker and Harley.
Feel free to hate their psychotic and abusive relationship, but you cannot deny that their devotion to each other is a little inspiring in a world where we so easily throw away people. The actor selection was perfect. The style of the characters was perfect. They were evil enough to be sinister, wacky enough to feel as flippant as the movie was meant to be, and human enough to be easily connected with as heroes. Granted, The Joker just screwed stuff up; yet, they effectively humanized him.
They play up the fact that what Harley really wants is a normal life raising kids with The Joker. It's not like she wants to be insane; her love drove to insanity. That is not a shocker if you know anything about her, but it was all beautifully portrayed on the screen. That made a difference to me.
3. Sexy Will Smith.
Home-slice was looking fresh. When I realized Will Smith was Deadshot, I was like, "no way, he can't do that." Yet, the whole movie, I was totally fine with Will Smith. Deadshot easily became one of my favorites. His suit felt a little lame from a handful of angles, which would be realistic. His gun skins looked like they were straight from "CoD." I was really happy. He was really sassy for a while, but finally he manned up, hopped on top of a car and just unloaded with insane accuracy into a swarm of weird mutant people.
4. Will Smith's beard.
Let's take a moment to acknowledge how glorious Will Smith's beard looked.
5. Diversity.
Our world is really busy being divided and fighting each other, whether with intentions to create unity or to create more division. So, hey, let's take a moment to acknowledge that a bunch of rich white dudes and a rich black lady took a bunch of criminals of various backgrounds and they all saved the world from some ancient magic people. That's us. We are the rich and poor, the police and criminals, the military, the white and black, the Hispanic and the Asian. We are the best and the worst. We can change the world.
At the end of the day, "Suicide Squad" really is just another movie with mixed reviews and opposing opinions. It has it's good and it's bad. I would rather appreciate Batman's Batman-ness, sexy Will Smith's beardedness and the positivity in this movie than focus on how Batman contributed next to nothing and The Joker barely even showed up. I am still a little salty about that part, but whatever. "Suicide Squad" blew my mind and was totally worth the watch.
