How to Score More Likes On Your Next Instagram Picture

It's safe to say that, in this day and age, people without an Instagram are the minority. Our generation is obsessed with following the lives of others while simultaneously sharing our own. There is also a fixation with how much interaction (likes and comments) we get on each of our pictures. As much as we may deny it, we track how many likes we get on each of our photos and continuously strive to gain more.

Looking to score more likes on your next Instagram post? These tips are surefire ways to up your like-game.

1. The Picture.

  • Outdoor photos have been proven to receive more likes than indoor photos.
  • Stay away from selfies: pics with friends and family receive more likes.
  • If you or someone else's face shows in the picture you are likely to get at least 38% more likes.
  • “Candid" shots for the win: always (whether they are actually candid or not).
  • Only post pictures of food every once in a while or they will start losing their likeability.
  • Only post Transformation Tuesday pictures that actually show a transformation.
  • Pets and animals get more likes than humans.
  • Aim for unique: your sunset photo that is exactly like 20 others in your feed will not prosper.

2. The Filter.

  • Studies show that cool, earthy tones (like blue, green, and beige) receive more likes than warm reds, yellows, and pinks.
  • Most liked filters: Willow, Early-bird, X-Pro II, Valencia.
  • Use an outside editing App such as Afterlight or Aviary.

3. The Caption.

  • Funny, witty, clever captions beat sentimental.
  • Sometimes simple is better: if you are ever worried about a caption, stick to a single emoji.
  • 3 emojis MAX in an Instagram caption.
  • Don't overdo hashtags.
  • If your Instagram is public and are looking for likes that way, the most commonly searched hashtag is #love [use accordingly].

4. The Location.

  • Posting a location alongside your picture grabs the attention of people mindlessly scrolling through their feed; plus, people are usually very interested in knowing where your picture was taken.
  • Use witty locations occasionally.

5. Time of Day.

  • Most like activity happens within the first few hours of a post, so this is a crucial time.
  • Post a MAX of 2 Instas a day; and if you do post 2, make sure they are posted at least 5 hours apart.
  • Bad times to post include: the middle of the night (when a majority of people are sleeping) and Friday or Saturday night (when people are out).
  • Good times to post include middle of the day (when people are bored in class scrolling through Instagram), after dinner time, special holidays, and throwback Thursday.

**BONUS TIP: Join a sorority and you almost always have a guaranteed 80 likes on each picture, especially if you're throwing what you know.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
