It's almost time to shine up your dress shoes and perfect your handshake; it's interning time. But before you're on your way, here are a few tips on what to do to prepare for your internship.
1. Dress to Impress: An internship is a whole new excuse to go on a shopping spree. You've got yourself into the office, great job- but if you show up in jeans and a t-shirt, no one is going to take you seriously. This is of course depends on what your office space is like, but regardless of whether you're interning at a hedge fund or a hedge (it sounded right), know the dress code. Guys, you may not take this one too seriously but nothing says success like a well-pressed tailored suit. 50% of having the part is dressing up like it.
2. Get on that grind, coffee grind that is: Now, personally I am not a coffee drinker and I stay awake by taking naps (it makes sense if you don't think about it). But that doesn't mean my bosses wont be asking me to make them five cups of coffee a day. I know this may sound silly but if you do not know how to make a decent batch of coffee – learn now.
3. Pencil yourself in: This is good advice for any kind of work you're doing. Whether you're in school or at an internship, always have a schedule. Trust me on this, this may seem like a little too much work but it will pay off. Having your schedule in order will not only keep your life in order but also just may impress your bosses.
4. Do your homework: Know where you are interning. Google everything you can and know the ins and outs of the place you are going to be spending the next few months at. This is going to make your work a whole lot easier and your time at your internship much more enjoyable once you know what the company does and works towards.
5. The correct answer is yes: An internship may not be all the glitz and glam that we see in the episodes of the Hills, and can actually be quite the contrary. Here's the thing, an internship is a huge learning experience and a great way to gain valuable knowledge in the field you see yourself working in. However, that is all, you are there to assist wherever you can and learn as much as you can. This is the time to humble yourself and not be hesitant to get into the nitty gritty. If your boss wants you to get her lunch and make 28682 copies of last weeks brief, you do it- no questions asked. Show your bosses that you are willing to work and do whatever is asked of you. This shows that you are not only a good and helpful intern, but also possibly a strong candidate for full time placement.
6. Don't be nervous, be prepared: Of course I am not really telling you to not be nervous, nerves are good and they keep you cautious. What I do suggest is to stay on top of your game. Stay prepared and be ready to work. If you have everything in order and you're ready to get down to business (to defeat the Huns), you have got absolutely nothing to be worried about. Remember, you were the one chosen for the job- you've got this.
