Pokemon Go, an app created by The Pokemon Company and Nintendo and developed by Niantic, was announced on September 9, 2015. The awesome video dropped on Youtube, and looks outrageous.
Players of the app game will be able to wander around their city to specific locations and capture virtual Pokemon with the GPS powers of their smartphones.
Pokemon GO players will also be able to battle other players using a bluetooth powered gadget called : Pokemon Go Plus. When in proximity to another player the Pokemon GO Plus will vibrate, alerting it's user.
Pokemon Go will literally turn their cities into playgrounds. Using the augmented technology that Niantic's successful app, Ingress, gives everyone a new reason to explore their surroundings. Meeting people, interacting in an engaging way, I don't know guys this app could have greater connectivity possibilities than, umm, Tinder! Or even those Tumblr meet ups, back when that was popular.
Pokemon has always had a weird way of connecting people with their games. From the first two games, Pokemon Blue, and Red, the potential to connect with a friend and either battle or trade Pokemon has been the biggest allure of the franchise. The now antique technology, game boy link cables were nerds bread and butter.
Except once we hit a certain age we all realized that it wasn't just nerds that loved Pokemon. EVERYONE loved them. Why do you think your bully used to beat you up for them? He was just jealous. Duh.
Simultaneously however we realized that we also all ditched our gameboys for smartphones somewhere before growing up. The cold fact of life set in and we all probably gave up hope of becoming Pokemon masters.
This new app seems like a great way to take advantage of inseparable nature of millennial's and their smartphones. The app even offers boss battles of sorts where multiple people in the same area can battle powerful Pokemon, like MewTwo, together.
Augmented Reality is a new technology that take reality and integrates computer generated images into them. This is what makes it possible to see a Charizard next to your favorite bar.
Niantic's success with Ingress was what inspired Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokemon Company, to creating the new Pokemon app. "Ingress was very impressive to me and I found myself really getting into the game. I also felt that it shared a common philosophy with Pokémon and that with the developer, Niantic, we could create a new type of Pokémon game, Ishiara at the Pokemon Go press release.
With a release slated for 2016, Pokemon Go seeks to find a new angle to connect people together.
