Is it just me, or are children ten times more annoying than they used to be? I take a step outside of my house and children are terrorizing the town. Meanwhile, their parents are on their phones or and ignoring the awful behavior of their offspring. Kiddies need some direction and, heaven forbid, guidance from an older, wiser guardian. What is that called? Oh yea - parenting. Get a handle on your kids people! I promise you could beat them in a fist fight if it came down to it. I also promise they don’t bite - unless you allowed them too. Discipline, hugs, love, compassion and quality time are wonderful, wonderful tools when it comes to raising a kid. Use them and stop making excuses for your kid’s wild behavior.
Allowing them to whine.
Nothing is worse than a whining child. “Mooooommm, but I want the coooookiieeee!” and this sentence could repeat itself into the next millennium. For some reason, parents these days have attempted to “ignore” the situation. Parents. It’s not working. If anything you’re just angering the surrounding population and force the idea of kicking your child in other people’s brains instead of recognizing how your child is acting like a complete butthole. Shoot the kid a sharp side-eye and be done with it. But for the love of god, don’t give them the damn cookie to stop them from whining. That’s just conditioning the child that whining will get them what they want. Duh.
Discipline is not encouraged.
It’s okay to say “no” to your child. They won’t blow up I promise.
Allowing zero distinction between an indoor and outdoor voice.
Parents just allow their child to speak at whatever volume they please whether they’re inside or not. Have they never explained to their child what an indoor voice is or are they just letting their child “express how they feel” no matter the hinderance to anyone else. Cool, I came to the public library to study, not hear your kid throw a fit.
Allowing them to have an iPad.
An iPad! Why in any situation would a child under the age of 13 (or ever) need to use an iPad. iPads aren’t a learning tool no matter how many apps argue against such thinking. Children are tactile in nature, which means they need to run around, touch things and genuinely explore the world. Children have survived for years without using a coloring app or an educational app that “teaches” them Spanish. Give them some crayons, a blank piece of paper and let them use their imagination for once.
Not teaching them anything.
It is more common these days that children will walk into preschool or kindergarten and not know how to use crayons, scissors, glue, how to count and/or how to write their own names. These facts boggle my mind. Are parents just letting TV monitor their kids? Why aren’t they taking the time to teach their kids how to craft, read or write. Parents, pick up a child-friendly book and read it to them. I guarantee they’ll love the time reading with their own mother or father than see loud blinking shapes and colors on a TV screen.
.
Mistaking sassiness for a sense of humor.
Most children don’t understand sarcasm; they’re honestly just saying whatever’s on their mind whether it’s nice or not. They’re not using a comedy tool in their daily routine, they’re just saying mean things and parents blow it off and even laugh when their child is sassy. Why not teach your kids how to be respectful instead of how to be a stand up comedian.
Rewarding their children for throwing a fit.
Whether it’s with food or a phone, parents these days will pretty much do anything just to shut their kids up except disciplining them. Call me crazy but I’m pretty sure you can put your child in a timeout for being naughty instead of rewarding them for terrible behavior.
Put down the parenting books, get off your phones and use your better judgement when raising some kids. If you actually spend time with them and mold them into the decent, tiny, adorable kiddies they should be, most behavior issues will disappear. For the rest of the public reading this, don’t go to jail for kicking a whining, rampaging five-year-old. Just keep in mind these mistakes previous parents have made. In short, keep babies off the electronics, take them outside and spend time with them. You’ll figure out pretty quickly how cool some kids really are. Meanwhile, try not to rip your hair out.
