How My Best Friend Changed My Life
Lauren Viar

I am amazed by the mind. Our minds will never stop expanding, will never stop creating ideas, never stop making connections. We are always forming new connections whether we know it or not. We form connections with books, with movies, and with music, but the connections that are the most amazing to me are the connections we make with other people. I think what amazes me the most about forming connections is that bonding ourselves to another person or another thing makes us more us than we thought we were and these connections give us the greatest realizations about our own lives. The connection that I have with my best friend has impacted my life incredibly and I wouldn't want my life any different. Through my friendship with my best friend, I have learned not just things about myself that I never knew existed within me but she changed me in ways that I cannot be more thankful for.

1. Whenever you think you did something extremely embarrassing, someone else has done something worse.

I am always so self conscious about my actions that I am always making sure I don't do anything that could even slightly be judged. My best friend is always there to reassure me that even when I do something that may or may not be embarrassing, someone else has done some way, way worse. And maybe that someone else is them.

2. Just because you aren't pretty like HER, doesn't mean you're not pretty.

When your best friend is basically a 10, it's not hard for your self esteem to be lower than usual. My best friend and I both have very different styles and just because your style doesn't look a certain way, doesn't mean it isn't pretty. And just because your best friend is pretty much a ten, doesn't mean you aren't right up there with them

3. We all have things that we're good at... and bad at.

Your best friend may be athletic and you may not be, but you will good at something else they are not. We all have our special talents and special skills. Don't feel bad about not being as good as your best friend at something.

4. Treat yo self

It's totally okay to buy that iced coffee you've been craving or that sign for your room from Target. You won't be a bad person for spending money on something you like.

5. Experiences are always better when you share them with someone.

There are so many incredible experiences we can have. Experiencing incredible moments by yourself is fun but when you go out and do amazing things with your best friend, it makes that experience so much more memorable.

6. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself.

You can only be so nice to people before you become a welcome mat. Don't let people take your kindness for granted because you deserve people who appreciate what you do for them, not use you.

7. There will always be someone there for you, no matter when or where.

You will never go through things alone. If you might think what you are going through isn't important or relevant, it is. There will always be a person who love you unconditionally that will be there to give you advice and support you, even at your worst.

I will never be more thankful for the incredible connection I have with my best friend. I don't think I can picture my best friend being anybody else and I wouldn't want it to be anybody else. We make so many connections with so many people and the one between my best friend and I is the one I cherish the most.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
