Flip back to 5th century when a good old friend named Saint Valentine walked the earth. For some reason, I doubt that he imagined that his act of defiance against the Roman Empire would result in fancy dinner reservations, formal wear, and couples suggestively flirting before heading back to their rooms with their significant other. This day, also referred to as “Single’s Awareness Day”, can cause stress for college students without a beau.
- 1.Go on friend-dates
That restaurant you keep wanting to try? Go there. Want to see fifth shades of gray? Do that. Chances are, you’re not the only single one among your friends, and there are bound to be people to hang out with. If you’re staying on campus during February break, there is no need to be bored. There’s so much to do and so many people to do it with, even if that just means staying in with friends and chipotle. You do you.
- 2.Treat yo’self
The best thing about V-day is that stores are filled to the brim with goodies. Be your own valentine and buy some for yourself, and spend the day doing whatever makes you happy. Netflix marathon featuring cupcakes and chocolate? I think yes. And the best part is, no one is around to judge you for stuffing your face, and you have no one to impress. So eat up girl.
- 3.Make your life your valentine
Real talk: you have so many amazing people in your life. Why don’t you spend some time on V-day reflecting on how weird and spectacular your friends are? They’ll stick with you way longer than a relationship will, and they love you unconditionally. Same with your family. Make sure they know you appreciate them today.
- 4.Realize it’s just another day
I think that by college, most of us have already realized that being single, and being single on Valentine ’s Day, is not the end of the world. We as students have SO much on our plates that a lot of us genuinely don’t have time for a relationship, and most of us couldn’t care less about this holiday anyway. Still, watching parades of couples and knowing you’re not a part of it can make a girl cringe a little. Just remember that when it comes down to it, Valentine ’s Day is just Saturday. So don’t be bitter about couples, and don’t feel left out, either. Just make the most of your weekend!
