As teenagers and young adults, we’re always focused on everything, but the present. We are worried about our future, our schedule for next semester, the memories of our past, our GPA, why the boy or girl we’ve been crushing on hasn’t texted us back yet, etc. Why is it that we have such a hard time simply living in the now? Realistically, it shouldn’t be that hard to just be, but we are full of worry and anxiety about what may or may not happen instead of just living. Instead of taking all of your energy and putting it into worrying, try focusing on the world around you at the present time.
1. Look around and smell the roses.
There’s so much beauty in the world around us and so much we miss when we are too busy checking our phones or with our heads in the clouds. Every once in a while, adventure to somewhere new. Visit a new place. Try out a new restaurant. Socialize with a new group of people.
2. Make time for yourself.
We spend a lot of time trying to please others rather than focusing on ourselves. It is so important to give yourself time to reflect -- whether it be on the day, the week, or just relaxing on your own.
3. Instead of over-stressing, take a deep breath (or a few).
There’s nothing wrong with getting overwhelmed -- college is a stressful time. But don’t let it take over. Take a deep breath, or two, and take control of the situation rather than letting it control you.
