Every day I sit here body shaming myself and hating that I don't look like the perfect models on my social media feeds. I know I'm not the only one. It's a horrible process we all go through, guys and girls. It's actually quite sad we can't feel comfortable in our own skin, because the media has driven this ideal image in our heads and we tell ourselves we're not beautiful unless we look like that.
Then there's the days when you try to embrace your body. Maybe you throw on Nicki Minaj and try to embrace that big booty! Or maybe you're a Meghan Trainor fan and you're all about that bass. Who knows. Regardless of your body type, it shouldn't take a song to feel beautiful in it.
There's been plenty of campaigns to love your body and that's great, but haven't you noticed it hasn't really made a big impact? People are still investing a ridiculous amount of money in weight-loss pills and stupid diet fads that "guarantee" you a perfect body. The media creates all these unrealistic images for people trying to get in shape. Don't forget your body is probably built completely different than a 6-foot-2 skinny model in the picture.
I've noticed body shaming also becomes a competition with your friends. You sit around in a group talking about the things you hate about your body and need to change. One friend will say, "I absolutely hate my fat arms," and then another friend will respond, "I'd take your arms over my thunder thighs!" It has become such a normal conversation, it's sickening. It's like we're trying to bet on who has the worst body features. This needs to change.
Maybe if we woke up and focused more on the things we love about ourselves, life would be a little easier. I know, I know...this is much easier said than done. I know it'll definitely take me awhile to fully love my body but I'm vowing to no longer let the media control how I think about myself. I'm tired of seeing myself and all my friends upset because we don't have model worthy bodies. One day someone is going to love every single little part of you. So stop stressing.
Start complimenting yourself more often and others! Once you stop comparing yourself to everyone else, you'll find a lot more happiness and beauty in being you. Just like JBiebs would say, "You should go and love yourself."
