Being single opens up so many doors. There are many more opportunities to change things now that you don't have another person to worry about, but there are also certain aspects of relationships that people who have been single for a while long for. Being single is nice because there is so much more free time and you can make your own plans and decisions, but here are a few thoughts you may have had if you've been out of a relationship for an extended amount of time:
You miss going out on dates with a special someone.
Constantly having someone to hang out with is great, because you know no matter what their plans are, they'll try to fit you into their schedule. Date night was always fun, whether it be going to the movies, exploring a new place, or even just taking a drive and maybe having a picnic. Now that you don't have someone to be with all the time, you feel more alone. Sometimes it feels that you're just wasting time when you're sitting around your house.
Your friends are your support for everything.
Even when you were in a relationship, your friends meant the world to you, but now that you are no longer with anyone they mean so much more. They were there for you when times were hard and they were there to pick up the pieces when you were all alone. They try to take the position of a boyfriend/girlfriend to cheer you up, but let's face it, it's not the same. Don't get me wrong, I can never thank my friends enough for all that they've done and I love them to death, but having someone look into your eyes and telling you they love you is one of the best feelings in the world.
You've now grown accustomed to sleeping alone and you dig it to an extent.
Sleeping alone is great, especially when your bed is huge. It's great to spread out and not have to worry about waking someone up in the middle of the night or talking in your sleep because you're sleeping alone, but even though some people don't admit to being the touchy-feely types, being cuddled to sleep is great. On a cold night in the middle of the winter, there is nothing better than having someone put their arms around you and keeping you warm until you fall asleep.
Holidays can be a son of a b*tch.
Holidays are when all the couples express their love for one another. For example, you go from waking up in the morning and having two Christmases to only having one and not being able to buy presents for a significant other or being able to kiss someone that you love on New Year's and just sitting around and watching all of the other couples celebrate, but the biggest burden of all is Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is over commercialized and if you're not in a relationship you feel totally out of things. If you're feeling alone on a holiday, go out and treat yourself.
Last, but not least, you miss the little things.
As much as we hate to sound like the overly romantic individuals that we can sometimes be, you know that everyone loves that little good morning text. It's just comforting to know that you were someone's first thought in the morning. You also tend to miss having someone to talk to all the time, having someone to call at the end of the day and have them listen to your problems and have them tell you their problems as well, because you know that you didn't mind listening. Having someone tell you that you look good or that you're important to them makes you feel great on the inside and can really boost self-esteem. It's hard to not miss being able to tell someone that you love them and hearing it back.
No matter how long you have been single, rest assured that there is someone out there. There's a special someone for everyone, perhaps they just haven't stepped into your life yet, but until then enjoy the time with your friends and family and most of all enjoy the new freedom that you have and get to love yourself.
