How It Feels To Be Home As Told By A Freshman

It's finally here! Winter break is upon us, which means that it is time to go home for a month! Friends, roommates, and maybe even the campus itself will be missed, but there are so many things to look forward to and love about going home.

1. Taking a shower for the first time without shower shoes.

I've gotten used to the necessity of them here, so the prospect of a clean shower that does not need shoes is almost a foreign concept.

2. Eating home cooked food.

Let's face it - the food at home is way better than dining hall food. You've been craving it, not only the home cooked food but also the fast food chains around your hometown. It'll be nice to have a Chick-fil-A 10 minutes from my house rather than a hour away.

3. No classes!!!!

One whole month of no homework, papers, exams, projects or getting up at early hours to get to your morning class across campus. It's almost too good to be true.

4. Seeing friends from home.

I haven't seen my friends since before we all left for college. Now I get the opportunity to see all of them and make plans without the stress of class or homework hanging over me. College friends are great, but I still miss my friends from home and will jump on every chance I get to spend time with them over break.

5. Sleeping in your own bed.

Nothing beats the feeling of your own bed. The dorm beds aren't terrible, but they will never be as comfortable as your bed from home.

There are things I am going to miss at WAC while I am home for a month:

1. Seeing and spending time with my group of friends.

I have spent most of my time with these people since I've been here. Now I won't see them for a month. I'll miss them most of all, but that's why they invented phones.

2. Having everything put away

Because packing up to go home is not an easy process. Once it's all packed in several bags, I have to go through the process of unpacking all of it to put away at home. It's a time-consuming process.

3. Domino's Delivery.

Because Domino's does not deliver in my hometown. Enough said.

4. Sharing a room with my roommate.

My roommate and I have gotten close, and I will miss the late night conversations and laughs we had.

5. The Washington College campus/ Chestertown.

Our campus is my home and I have grown accustomed to seeing it and walking it over the last four months. The longest I've been away from it is 5 days, not a month. I won't be able to walk down the Cater and admire the trees or walk into Chestertown and just spend time there. I have to go a month without seeing any of it. I am excited to go home, but I will be equally as excited to return.

I have gotten so used to living on campus at Washington College; I consider it my home. I will miss this home but I am excited to be spending the next month at my house in my hometown. I'll be back to this home in January, but for now, I am at my first home. After all, there's nothing wrong with having two homes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
