For those of you who don't know, Mississippi College (being a Baptist institution) does not have a Greek life system. Instead we have a similar system of Men's Service Clubs and Women's Social Tribes. I completed the pledge process for Rotaract Men's Club this past fall. As with the Greek system, pledges are given a Big during the pledge process. The Big's responsibility is to guide, encourage, and to act as a mentor to their Little. It's a special relationship that endures far beyond each member's time at MC. What often happens is that pledges start the process and grow closer to an older member who adopts them as a Little. For Adam Morgan (my Big) and I, we have a different story.
Summer of 2015, Adam and I met at a Christian camp called Conquer that we both were leading at. I had just graduated and I was planning on attending MC that fall. Adam and his friend Mary Beth Davis (who deserves an entire article by herself that I will write at a later date) were both MC students who had just finished up their freshman year. We three met and we realized that we were all going to be at MC together and we got as close as you could be in that one week's span of time. They helped me work past some major anxiety that I had about leaving home and moving to Clinton at the time. We kept in touch over the summer and we were super excited when we reunited on Move-In Day. From there, Adam and I only got closer. Looking back on Pref Day (when pledges chose with Club or Tribe to rush), It wouldn't be a stretch to say that my relationship with Adam heavily influenced my decision to rush Rotaract.
When reveal night came, nobody was surprised that we were Big and Little. I joke that Adam had been my Big long before I even entered the pledge process because of the friendship and brotherhood that we'd already formed. It's amazing how God can weave the stories of two complete strangers together to create such a great friendship. Six months ago, I had no idea that Adam Morgan existed (let alone that he would become my Big). Now I count him as one of the greatest friends that I've ever had.
Why do I feel like this story is worth sharing? Here's why. I am prone to believing the lie that I completely understand God's plan and that I know what He's up to at every turn and it's insanity. I had no idea that He would bring Adam and I together, yet He knew before He breathed life into the original Adam in Eden that He would forge this brotherhood. God's plan is so much greater and so much more complex than mine could ever be.
This is the takeaway. Understand that God's plan is filled with amazing things that you aren't going to see coming. Don't be anxious that you don't know what's going to happen. Look forward to experiencing God's awesome plan for your life. He WILL surprise you and it'll be the greatest thing you've ever experienced. Keep your eyes open because God is going to throw some awesome things your way.
To Adam: Thank you for being a brother, a mentor, a confidant, and most of all thank you for being an amazing friend. You've been there for me every step of the way so far and I am more than excited to see what God has in store for us. I can only hope that I can have the same amazing impact on my future Little someday that you've had on me.
