How To Get Through The Election Season

It's tough, but we can make it through.

Through media like the news to social media, the election this year has really made some people nervous. There are people who will share every post they see that supports their views, those who go out of their way to tell others they are wrong, and those who are just too scared to get involved. Whether you are heavy into politics or just along for the ride, there’s only one thing to successfully get you through the election season: laughing. That’s right; laughing is the solution to making this last month not completely terrible.

It’s important to recognize the flaws of both candidates and the constituents voting for each. Instead of getting angry and upset when someone disagrees with you or when you read an infuriating post, just laugh at it. It reminds yourself that you are not running for president and don’t have to deal with the stupidity that is election propaganda. Also, laugh because you choose to be above posting every little political thought that pops into your head on Facebook or Twitter. Laugh because you understand boundaries, and which lines are appropriate to cross and which are not.

We all know those people who take politics (well everything really) a little too seriously. It’s like a jab at their candidate of choice is a jab to their own heart. I used to be this person towards the beginning of the election; I would get really offended when I read things, especially things that weren’t true, about the candidate I was supporting. I would feel the need to lash out and defend my candidate as if he/she was my own parent, someone who I was trying to defend. However, as time passed and the election got a little messier, I realized that these candidates don’t need us defending them, but they also don’t need us putting them down in every way possible. I learned to keep my opinions to myself and just be thankful that I’m not a candidate for president.

Instead of getting mad and lashing out, I simply laugh. I laugh at the articles that show the author has no clue what he/she is talking about. I laugh at the complete lack of logic and contradictions throughout. I laugh because I didn’t get that desperate to feel the need to write an article to defend my position. I also laugh to remind myself that this presidency is only going to be four or eight years. Nothing is permanent; mistakes can always be corrected.

Politics is just something we as Americans are going to have to deal with, whether we like it or not. Also, as Americans, we have the right to support whomever we think will be the best for president. So no matter who you support, Clinton or Trump, it’s fine. Vote for who you want, but just know that there will be all sorts of people against you. Instead of being bogged down by that fact, just laugh because you are privileged enough to live in an amazing country where you get to elect your leaders and are able to be a part of the process. Just laugh because there are so many things that are worse out there than Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
