Dear Dog,
Even though you cannot read this, and even if I tried to read it to you you’d just look at me with a blank stare and a wagging tail, it’s important for me to say how much you mean to me. When I came across you I wasn’t in a place where I felt empty or even an overwhelming pain, but when I was able to bring you home I realized you filled a part of me that was missing. I cannot thank you enough for how in these past few months you’ve changed my life for the better, but let me just say all the reasons you are so important to me.
When I found you covered in dirt and skinny as could be my heart knew you deserved a new home. The night I rescued you I had all these mixed feelings as if I wasn’t sure if I was ready to take care of another living creature, and if it was right of me to take you away from everything you knew. But one thing I was sure of was that I was going to try and make you one happy dog. What I didn’t realize was how happy you were going to make me in return.
Because of you I smile at the little things
Because you show me that is easy to get excited over anything. Like me coming home early, or opening a package of string cheese, and even taking a quick walk outside. All the little things I take for granted make your life complete.
Because of you I appreciate the beauty of each day
Even if there is a thunder storm, a sunny day, or a cold breeze I have to make sure you get some time outside. And those days that seem the gloomiest to me, make you light up just to go for a walk.
Because of you I always feel safe
I never get a “no” from you when I ask you to go running. I know you’ll never let me down and always protect me. All the nights I come home late from work or spend the night alone you are right there to make me feel safe. You never leave my side and wouldn’t have it any other way. You are the perfect body guard, running partner, and cuddle ball all in one.
Because of you I have an unconditional love
You’ve chewed up my favorite pair of rainbows and had accidents in the house, but no matter how mad I get towards you, you love me anyways. The days I wish I did better in school, made more at work, or feel like I’m failing at life you look at me with absolutely no judgement in your eyes. Even if it feels like I am disappointing everyone else, I know I am making you happy and that’s all that counts.
The thing that breaks my heart the most is knowing you don’t have as much time on this earth as I do. You are a much purer creature than I could ever be, and because of that I look at the world with a more positive point of view. So thank you dearly my dog for all you’ve done, because even though I didn’t realize it at the time you actually rescued me.
