College—a new chapter of your life where you embark on a new journey. It's exciting, nerve-wracking and a little bit uneasy at times, and that’s okay. Your life changes in a lot of ways. You’re in a new environment, meeting new people, adjusting to a workload that you may not be used to, learning more about yourself and becoming independent.
A part of this journey may call for you to be away from your family. Whether you’re not too far from home or you’re hours away it takes some getting used to. After moving in, it may feel weird that your family gives you hugs and kisses goodbye and leaves—without you. For me, I was always extremely sad when I would say goodbye to my family and make that four hour drive. At first, it feels strange and lonely but that feeling won’t last forever. Once you get into the swing of things, get into a schedule, and go out and meet people you will slowly start to feel less homesick.
Make sure not to dwell on the feeling of homesickness. Don’t just sit in your room and pout, get up and explore campus and meet some new people! Get better acquainted with your roommate(s), since they are a part of your everyday life now. A lot of campuses host events that all people to get to know one another and just have fun. Take advantage of that! Meeting new people and having fun will surely take your mind off of things. Take advantage of your new found freedom (use discretion) and enjoy yourself. Keep an eye out for organizations on your campus that may peak your interest. Getting involved on campus is good for your resume, a great way to meet people, and enjoy yourself by taking part in something that interests you. Surrounding yourself with things you enjoy takes off a lot of the stresses of school. It is also okay to enjoy time by yourself. You’re independent now, so if you want to take some time to yourself that’s fine too. Don’t feel awkward if you want to take a trip to the dining hall by yourself—it’s totally normal. If your school has a gym, get yourself on a workout routine. Working out is a great for you and will keep your mind occupied. It is still good to call your family, but make sure you’re not calling them too much. By calling them every second of the day, you’re not giving yourself time to adjust to your new everyday life. This is a time to become independent, and although you may miss them dearly, give yourself space. It’s also good to go home, but again, not too much. Going home every weekend is not a good idea because you need to give yourself time. Try not to go home for at least the first two weeks unless it’s absolutely necessary (which it probably isn’t).
These changes and adjustments may take some time. Be sure to take your time and not to force yourself to just “get over it,” it will happen naturally. Your family will miss you just as much as you miss them, if not more but it’s just a part of life to leave the nest. Enjoy your time in college because these years will fly by!
