Nothing has ever terrified me more than my discovery of Trump's election as president. I would like to think that Trump is not a terrible person or that he can actually make America great again. But I can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that this person is extremely racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic and Islamophobic. It baffles me to think that more than 60 million people voted for such an individual who verbally degrades millions of minorities. No matter what Trump is capable of doing, it is not acceptable to discriminate against many different groups of people on national television, or anywhere else for that fact. Yes, people have the freedom of speech, but why is Trump hating on so many different people without knowing what their life entails and how they are as an individual.
It's not just Trump and his words that are absolutely frightening, it's the actions of his supporters which is petrifying. Trump isn't the one who is physically attacking other people, which doesn't justify his verbal attacks, but his supporters all over this nation are attacking Blacks, Muslims, Mexicans, and the LGBTQ community. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that doesn't make it okay for one to hate on someone else's existence just because they are different or because they have different beliefs.
When I scroll through social media or the news, the stories about hate crimes going on all over this nation is just purely heartbreaking. My heart aches every time I read about an incident of how people are attacking Muslim people or Mexican people merely because they are different. Experts say that the crime rate since Tuesday have spiked even higher than post 9/11. There have been more than 200 reported incidents of hate crimes against Muslims, Blacks, and Hispanics since Tuesday's results. After the elections, it gave people the courage to openly hate and commit acts of violence just because the president-elect will back them up.
The following is just one of many incidents that have occurred since Tuesday:
It is just completely heartbreaking to see that something like this is happening, especially in the 21st century, after all the progress this country has made. It fills my heart with sorrow to know that some people are still willing to lynch people of color. Since the Civil Rights Movement started in 1954, black people have struggled to gain equal rights and that struggle never truly ended, but no one ever thought it would go all the way to back where it all began. Some people believe that they are better than everyone else because of a few differences in skin color or ethnicity, and it's just wrong to have that kind of mentality during such progressive times. Now, I completely understand that not all of Trump's supporters feel this way, but it's just sad to see some still have the mentality from the late 1900s. Whether it is their education level or not, people should have the common sense not to believe that someone is less superior because of the way they look or because of what they believe.
It doesn't matter if someone voted for Trump because they thought Clinton was a bad candidate or that he could make a difference and "make America great again." Voting for Trump has turned this country into a chaotic state where people are inducing hatred or enduring hatred. You are either a part of the oppressed or a part of the oppressors. Even if you are just watching things from the sidelines and do not do anything to stop the oppression, you are just as part of the oppressors as the oppressors themselves. With all the differences there is no real way to unite everyone as a whole country.
